The Partnership for Active Travel and Health calls on national governments to commit to walking and cycling in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to reach climate goals and improve people’s health and lives.🚶♂️🚴♀️ Alongside 286 other organisations, World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) is proud to sign the PATH open letter to national governments which calls for increased ambition, action, and investment in their climate commitments to fully unlock the benefits of walking and cycling. Enabling more people to walk and cycle safely and to access public transport by foot and bicycle can help cut transport emissions in half by 2030. More active travel will in turn help tackle the growing physical inactivity crisis which sees 31% of adults and 81% of adolescents not moving enough to stay healthy. For the first time cycling has appeared at a major platform at COP — a perspective long overdue. “Enabling more people to walk and cycle safely and to access public transport by foot and by bicycle can help cut transport emissions in half by 2030. Despite two-thirds of nations having active travel policies in place, there remains a pressing need for increased ambition, action, and investment in their climate commitments to fully unlock the benefits of walking and cycling.” by @carltonreid@bird.makeup Xitter: @carltonreid https://buff.ly/3UZ89qO #sustainabletransport #COP29 #ActiveMobility #ActiveTransport #CommuteByBike #TrufiAssociation

🚴♀️ "W𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘅." – Jill Warren, Women In Cycling Webinar. At #COP29, ECF and The Partnership for Active Travel and Health put active mobility at the centre of global transport decarbonisation talks. Key facts: 🔑 𝟲𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘀 are under 5km – perfect for walking or cycling. Yet, over half are still taken by motor vehicles. ⚡ E-bikes extend travel range to 10km, making 𝟳𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘀 suitable for active mobility modes. This underscores the urgent need for prioritising walking and cycling in countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). 🌟 During the Women in Cycling Webinar, our CEO Jill Warren shared insights on our activities at #COP29 and how governments can support active travel to tackle climate change. The opportunity to offset transport demands with physical activity represents one of the largest areas for realizing potential co-benefits across our civilization. For some countries, adding up to an hour of active transport per day for adult populations can save over 10% of GDP per annum in avoidable costs. Yes, our land transport paradigm is THAT broken, and yes, the solutions are THIS simple. Take back the streets from cars, take back your mobility from the fossil fuel paradigm. Demand infrastructure that works for everyone and improves health and safety for all. #RideYourBike
Our report, The Path Less Traveled, demonstrates that cycling infrastructure networks are among the most cost-effective investments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the urban transport sector. 🚲🌍 #WorldBicycleDay https://lnkd.in/gJJG9UU2

Both walking and cycling have great potential to reduce CO2-emissions. While many countries have recognised this potential and included active mobility in their NDCs or in national policies, only very few countries have included plans for investments. 🌍 💸 This lack of investment plans jeopardises the positive effects active mobility could have on the countries’ efforts to mitigate climate change. The PATH report linked below shows which countries have which plans for active mobility. It also includes a template to support countries in unlocking the full benefits walking and cycling have to offer. Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/eS287_dy

Cycling is one of the most climate-friendly modes of transportation. It therefore should play a crucial part in European and national climate policies, in particular since the transport sector is very much lagging behind other sectors in decarbonising. With the draft National and Energy Climate Plans, EU Member States have been putting their 2030 reform plans to the European Commission. Our analysis shows that, across the board, EU Member States still fall short on leveraging the potential of cycling. But it's a mixed bag. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e97NiJ8H
