Richard Hemingway, Health, Safety and Wellbeing Director has been speaking to BBC Radio Oxford and #BBC Radio Solent today about #RespectOurWorkforce Week. People shouldn’t feel threatened or abused simply for doing their job. That’s why we are supporting the #StampItOut campaign through encouraging reporting of workforce abuse, sharing experience and ideas between supporters, and raising public awareness of this important issue. The negative impact of verbal and physical assault on roadworkers health and wellbeing is well known, and 1 in 3 industry recruits leave because of this issue. The past decade has seen a rise in reported incidents of abuse towards roadworkers and we are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on the road network including our people. The attack on Maria Coto is unacceptable and a grave injustice to those dedicated to making a positive impact in our communities through social work. We call urge our partners in government community leaders, and employers to prioritize the safety of social workers by: - Implementing robust safety protocols and emergency response systems. - Providing regular mandated safety trainings. - Mandating field social workers be paired with colleagues or aides. - Supporting federal legislation like the Protecting Social Workers and Health Professionals from Workplace Violence Act (2022). Social workers are essential in creating stronger and healthier communities. It's our shared duty to ensure their safety and well-being as they care for communities across New York State. 💪🛡️ #ProtectSocialWorkers #SafetyFirst #SupportOurSocialWorkers #SocialWorkSafety

If the issue that we are memorialising is so important, the commemoration should always happen on the nominated day. I don't agree with International Workers Memorial events on days other than April 28. Shifting the ceremonies indicates that worker health and safety is a flexible issue when speakers at the ceremonies often say that it is of paramount concern. https://lnkd.in/gW63y95H (Open Access) #IWMD24 #OHS #WHS #healthandsafetyatwork #workhealthandsafety #memorials #workerdeaths

In our recent blog, I consider the employment status of volunteers. An Employment Appeal Tribunal decision has served as a reminder that labelling an individual as a 'volunteer' does not necessarily prevent them from having employee or worker status – it will depend on the practical reality of the situation rather than the label attached by the parties.
