I just read that PG Gyllenhammar has passed away. He was one of Sweden’s most prominent business leaders, His most notable role was as CEO and later chairman of Volvo AB, where he served from 1971 to 1993. Under Gyllenhammar’s leadership, Volvo experienced a period of substantial growth and international expansion. He championed the diversification of the company, steering Volvo not only toward cars and trucks but also into sectors such as marine engines and construction equipment. Gyllenhammar advocated for long-term business strategies and emphasized the importance of innovation, quality, and sustainability. One of his most notable initiatives was the attempted merger between Volvo and Renault in the early 1990s. The merger aimed to strengthen their position in the global automotive market but faced strong resistance from shareholders, ultimately leading to Gyllenhammar’s resignation in 1993. Despite this setback, his efforts are seen as having laid the groundwork for Volvo’s continued success as a global player in the automotive industry. Gyllenhammar was also deeply engaged in societal issues, promoting collaboration between business, labor unions, and politics. He addressed matters of equality and working conditions, supporting greater representation of women in corporate leadership. His leadership style was characterized by strategic foresight and a willingness to challenge traditional business models. PG Gyllenhammar was a symbol of Swedish industrial innovation and leadership, whose work has left a lasting impact on Volvo and Swedish business culture as a whole. A big loss for Swedish industry….

Thank you to Stacey Rudser for this article which highlights some important points in the challenges of making the Aircraft Maintenance Industry sustainable. This is most definitely not a US centric issue, it is a global one. It impacts all levels of the industry from training, when the majority or all of the instructors don't look like you or understand your unique challenges, to gaining experience and developing your career. Earlier this year, yes in March 2024 a male US senator assumed a woman in front of him was a stewardess and not a pilot, after she had introduced herself as a pilot. If this is happening in congress, what do women on the shopfloor experience? I cannot stress this enough, we are making a choice to have industry shortages and impact safety and innovation by not creating a more inclusive industry. We are missing out on talent and we are stifling growth. We are also not doing what is right. I have seen the peaks and troughs of this industry over many years and the shortages now are here to stay, unless we make some drastic changes. The way it has been is not the way it needs to be. A more inclusive industry is better for everyone, those in it and those wanting to join and for those who haven't even considered it yet. https://lnkd.in/gQrqf7Ev
