💡SCHOLAR SPOTLIGHT | Dr. Dianne Pinderhughes was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow from 2003-04 and has a longstanding career focusing on the Civil Rights movement- past, present, and future. While at the Wilson Center, Dr. Pinderhughes dedicated time to her ongoing book project, "The Evolution of Civil Rights Organizations in the Twentieth Century: African American Politics and the Voting Rights Act." The Wilson Center particularly appealed to Dr. Pinderhughes because of its unique balance of academic rigor and ties to government through Congress, which aligns with her hopes of translating research into lasting change. Her time at the Wilson Center laid much of the groundwork for her future work related to Civil Rights history, organizations, and gendered experiences. “According to an American Council of Trustees and Alumni survey released in February, almost half of Furman University students reported experiencing or witnessing uncivil treatment for sharing political or social views. Moreover, 39% of Republicans and 20% of Democrats report being socially excluded for sharing their political or social views. Almost 40% of Republican students said they self-censor fairly or very often.” “…the university’s new efforts [on freedom of speech and civil discourse] should be commended, but they won’t fix the problem on their own. That’s why more and more Furman alumni like me are joining the Furman Free Speech Alliance. We love our alma mater, and we want Furman to be a place where we can be proud to send our children. So, we’re holding the administration accountable for protecting and promoting free speech on campus. “And we’re not alone. A fast-growing number of alumni at colleges and universities across the country — from nearby Davidson to the Ivy Leagues — are fed up with the status quo and are advocating major reforms at their schools.” Bravo, Furman Free Speech Alliance, for defending the values that are the lifeblood of liberal education. Yesterday, the Furman Free Speech Alliance’s Evan Myers published an opinion piece in the Post & Courier, South Carolina’s biggest newspaper, calling on Furman President Elizabeth Davis to keep her promises about prioritizing free speech by ending the university’s current practice of requiring prospective professors to write onerous and politically charged "diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) statements." 🎓 Proud moment: One of my brilliant former students, a Cambridge law graduate, recently authored a critical piece exploring Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights. The paper highlights how the pursuit of secularity can sometimes disproportionately affect minorities, particularly Muslim women, and reflects on the tension between state-driven models of liberty and individual freedoms. This work resonates deeply in the context of anti-racism, reminding us how structural biases can marginalize certain groups under the guise of neutrality. It’s a call to remain vigilant in protecting diverse identities while striving for equity in our systems. Let’s continue amplifying voices like theirs that challenge the status quo and push for meaningful change. 🙌 #HumanRights #AntiRacism #DiversityAndInclusion
I had the opportunity to write a critical piece on Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights, examining its case law and discussing how, at times, the pursuit of secularity can veer into the absurd and disproportionately impact minorities—especially Muslim women. Published as part of a philosophy conference on the Kairos and Freedom, the paper delves into the tension between the state's evolving preference for a positive model of liberty and the individual’s shrinking margin for personal freedom. This reflection raises important questions about the balance between secular governance and respecting diverse identities.

Today is Human Rights Day, the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But did you know that one of the rights enshrined in this important document is a human right to science? Article 27 of the declaration states: “Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.” But what is the right to science? And why should we celebrate it? Sujatha Raman and Brian Schmidt of The Australian National University explain. 💬 To read more: https://lnkd.in/gUB5Uyrn

The intellectual academic free market has demonstrated time and again that these are valid and important perspectives and programs. Fascinating how folks who claim to be against government regulation and for the free market are willing to regulate heavily the exchange of ideas and intervene in the work of private institutions. Interesting how they love the idea of bureaucrats policing research and discourse.
