#GivingTuesday is an important day for nonprofits. It's one where they not only receive a lot of donations (which are needed to continue to do the work they set out to do) but also a way to highlight how people in the local community can participate in their mission beyond financial support. We love to partner with organizations doing work that aligns with our company values. I’m really in awe to see so many wealthy women organizing and chairing events for Hawai’i (*insert group*) for Harris. It got me thinking- how powerful it could be to also focus on increasing the involvement of diverse women in local politics right here in Hawai’i. In the lead-up to this year's primary elections, female candidates raised an average of $23,492, while men raised twice as much. The largest gap between male and female candidates was in individual contributions, where women raised only 23% of total individual donations. There’s a strong focus on advocating for a female president but it raises the question: how do you address the treatment of women in leadership positions within your own local community? Within your organization? High-profile advocacy is very demure, very classy… But I hope the commitment for progress isn’t just a trend/ cause du jour but something that sticks and drives lasting impact, both nationally and locally.

Are you frustrated about your inability to meet your fundraising goals? Maybe folks don’t understand what you do or how their gift will matter. Values, vision, and voice must be clear to donors - especially to female donors. Women value connection, and they feel connected with and supportive of their communities when they give. Gift givers need to connect to your values and vision. Voice is another important component. When approached by a group that is needing millions, a potential donor may feel that his or her ability to contribute may not be meaningful. Make sure that you can show how gifts of all sizes make impact. It is important to hear the voices of donors who speak freely, comfortably, and proudly about how their gift makes a difference. Let me help you craft your messaging. Message matters.
