November is #MakeAWillMonth! Let’s talk about the rules for making a will. To make a will in PEI, you must be at least 18 years old and have the capacity to understand what making a will means. This includes knowing the effect of your will, the property you own, and any potential claims others might have on your estate. If you're under 18, you may still make a will if you are: 💍 Married 🎖️ In the Armed Forces, or ⚓ A mariner or seaman at sea. Your will must be signed by you in front of two witnesses. Your witnesses must also sign it. If you're unable to sign, you can direct someone to sign it for you in your presence with two or more witnesses. The witnesses must be at least 18 years old, competent, and not beneficiaries of your will, or the spouses of beneficiaries (whether married or common-law).
