I understand the dilemma David Barnett, although in 25 years of selling businesses, I have never listed any Vendor's business with a guide price. It automatically puts a ceiling on price. Business are worth different amounts to different buyers. With over 350 successful transactions behind me, the average spread of valuations has been 134% between lowest and highest offers. The market will decide what a business is worth, not an FD or Accountant with a calculator using arbitory multiples. When potential buyers press for a price upfront, the answer is always the same, "we have no preconceived price in mind, that's why we have approached a number of companies like yours, where we believe there is an excellent strategic fit, to make an indicative offer by X date" That way you are not putting a ceiling on price, introducing the fact that there will be some competive tension between interested parties and making it timebound. That's a key strategy in achieving a premium price. Clinton Lee is right, typically at the very bottom end of the market is a price given. It's lazy, and all about shifting a high volume of tiny businesses as quick as possible. It's not about maximising price for the Seller.
