At an event few days back, I spoke about the importance of community in business. I highlighted the benefits of how knowing people in business opens new avenues for you and how one can make more revenue by harnessing the connections made within business communities. I also talked about how entrepreneurship is a lonely journey but one that can be made easier by forming the right connections and building relationships with the right people through such communities. You have a choice to make as a creative individual or an entrepreneur in the creative industries: If you haven’t built a community – or at least a relationships with fans -- you will not have any independence, ever; you will have to make and shill for the corporations. Resurge: A community for aspiring entrepreneurs In the past few weeks, I have interacted with a few successful and aspiring entrepreneurs and realized how underrated a community of likeminded people and networking is. It really helps to listen to journeys of other people and often gives you the motivation or much needed reality check. We are building a community of aspiring and early stage entrepreneurs with fire in the belly! Ideas spark when we talk about it. We gain clarity while brainstorming and so often we can get a proof of concept. People who have rode on the same paths can advise on Do's and Dont's and save us time. We might come together at weekly or bi-weekly frequency to brainstorm on ideas or problems, introductory calls, have some offline meet-ups etc. as we take it further as a community. Work is more meaningful with community. Going on an entrepreneurial path can be lonely. Not a lot of people understand what you're doing. You lose friendships along the way. When things aren't great, you get reclusive. Then you talk to another entrepreneur and you realize: "damn, you're going through it too huhn?" It's not only entrepreneurship. It's just life. - New job. - New city. - New lifestyle. - Lost job. - Lost identity. - Far from home. Anything that has to do with a transition in life builds up uncertainty and can be difficult to navigate on your own. That's why it's important to find a community of like-minded people (a mastermind) to share your stories, build empathy, and to keep one another accountable. Do NOT start building your community until you are crystal clear on one thing. Who is it for? Specifically? The more clearly you can picture your ideal member, the easier it will be to create offers and messages that meet their needs. Michel Bachmann once said, “Ultimately, it’s the quality of people and the relationships between them that keep a community together. Human connection (or lack thereof) will trump a strong mission statement any time.” Building those relationships means attracting people who can rally around a common purpose. So don’t just say your community is for “moms” or “entrepreneurs.” Dig deeper. There are loads of reflection questions to consider, but here are a few to get you started. ☀️ What problem will your community solve for your members? ☀️ What is your ideal member’s life like before joining your community? What is it like afterward? ☀️ What does your community offer that your members can’t easily find elsewhere? Know who you want in your community and why they will want to be there. Everything else flows from there.
