Man, this brings me back. Early in my career, I was promoted to the safety team at a glass plant and volunteered to become the Forklift Certification Instructor. I got my training, aced it, and then had to do the recertification to a room full of operators that had been driving longer than I had been alive. Intimidating? Yes. How did I survive? 1) Acknowledge their knowledge. Make sure they know that you know that they know their stuff. 2) Remind them why we're there. It's not to say "You don't know what you're doing" it's to say, "Job #1 is keeping everyone safe. I care about the team, you care about the team, the fact that I'm here means the company cares about the team." 3) Use concrete examples from the location if possible, from other sites if not. You need to make it real. Not to scare people, but to show that rules / SOP's are there for a reason, not because someone behind a desk just made it up. Finally, most corporate trainers will hate this but: 4) "If they're making fun of the rule, they know the rule." Don't take it personally, don't worry, don't get upset if they're cracking jokes, etc. The time to worry is if everyone is checked out, or ignoring you completely. Make all the jokes you want about wearing PPE, as long as you do it while wearing your PPE. :)

As part of #NationalSafeWorkMonth, AGWA asked Members to share some of their stories. Ian Hay from Chevron Glass Pty. Ltd. in SA shared the following about forklift safety. Never underestimate forklift driver safety. Chevron Glass employed an independent trainer in this field to provide awareness through a presentation. Reviewing the WHS Act, WHS Regulations, National Codes of Practice and Guidelines we found that there were a few processes that even our most experienced operators needed to reacquaint themselves with. Out of a long list of topics, the following were our most relevant: WHS Legislation, Shifting and Moving Loads, Safe Work Limits, Chain of Responsibility and Forklift Exclusion Zones. In the current employment crisis, most new workers can lift pallets and the basics, but when it comes to the complexities of lifting glass and products with a forklift, the consequences of inexperience or naivety can be devastating. Please review your practices. List it as an agenda item at your team meetings. Remember, Safety is Everyone’s Business. #safetyisourbusiness #safeworkmonth #Forkliftsafety #worksafe #glassandwindows #safeworkaustralia #worksafely

the importance of safety in the workplace so that everything goes well.
🚧 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗳 🦺 On Monday, May 13th, we paused all of our operations to focus on what matters most at Sif Group: safety and safe working practices. Our Safety Day at both Roermond and Rotterdam locations saw full participation from our dedicated team, and from our clients and subcontractors. This year, we introduced two new Life Saving Rules: 𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 and 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀, bringing our total to nine. These additions reflect our commitment to continuous improvement and ensuring a safer work environment for everyone. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by all participants was truly inspiring. Together, we took important steps to reinforce our safety culture and protect each other 👷♀️👷♂️. Watch the full recap of our Safety Day: https://lnkd.in/eA4yq_MQ
