Why did the scarecrow get the job?.... Happy rainy Monday to my fellow New Englanders! As we dive into this spooky season, I’m hearing from people across different niches that roles are starting to open up from previously quiet clients! On the flip side, I’ve also spoken with folks who, despite performing well with their desks and spreads, have been let go due to budget cuts at their agencies. Even if you’re not actively job hunting, it’s always a good idea to have a resource like me in your corner. Location, Location, Location- not just applicable to Real Estate. It's just as important in your career journey. I'm not just talking about physical location (Although HCOL usually means greater pay) I'm talking about your company too. Want to advance quickly in responsibilities? Smaller companies are generally the best bet- but be warned you'll wear a lot of hats and the buck probably stops with you. Want to gain experience to help you launch into higher paying roles? Larger companies usually look good on your resume and allow you to touch many tools that you can leverage into your next position. AND- the same title can mean different things & much different pay depending on the company. A VP at a bank is usually an individual contributor- equivalent to a "Senior" level employee. A VP almost anywhere else is managing directors who manage managers and is responsible for the overall strategy and P&L for their org. An Executive Assistant can make 50k working for a director in Alabama, or make 200k working for a CEO in Silicon Valley. Sometimes your "worth" is more about where you're working than the work you're doing. Hiring Manager: I'm not seeing the right candidate. I need to see more. Recruiter: But we are sending you people who reasonably match your job description. What's wrong with them? Hiring Manager: Yes, but they don't exactly fit the role. I need a superstar who can hit the ground running! Recruiter: We found a superstar. He works for a competitor in the same job. Hiring Manager: Yes! This is precisely what we are looking for! I'm sure he'd hit it out of the park for us! Recruiter: Great! But...he's not interested. Hiring manager: Why not!? This is a great job! Recruiter: Because, it's a lateral move. He wants YOUR job. A true "superstar" candidate isn't going to accept a lateral move. They are looking to be challenged. Why not give the up-and-comer a chance instead? You may find yourself with a future superstar!
