This week's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) Transport News Brief lead comment, Plans for growth Today, SMMT has published the latest UK commercial vehicle (CV) manufacturing figures for August – showing that year on year, production is down -10.0% with 6,044 units rolling out of UK factories. Context, however, is important. August is a low output month due to the traditional ‘summer shutdown’, meanwhile percentage changes are amplified – and the decline was equivalent to just 673 fewer units. Year to date, volumes are still 8.8% up on 2019’s pre-pandemic output. Exports continued to dominate output with more than half of output (59.3%) produced for overseas markets, with the EU receiving the lion’s share (97.2%). With vehicle production so important to the UK economy, it’s no surprise that the new government is committing to boosting the jewel in the crown of UK manufacturing base, the automotive industry – as outlined in Labour’s plan for the Automotive Sector, with key aspects like building an electric vehicle (EV) workforce and accelerating domestic battery manufacturing. They also recognise that while it’s important to focus on finished vehicle and battery production, there is a wealth of further opportunity for supply of other essential EV components such as powertrains, fuel cells and power electronics. Making sure the nation benefits from the technology the sector provides is also crucial. Last week, the government announced £88 million of funding for 46 projects aimed at boosting development and use of zero emission vehicle tech. Projects include deploying zero emission trucks delivering our post, and cleaner, greener bus journeys. In short, the funding will back projects that will lower emissions across the country, while also supporting skilled jobs. The Faraday Institution also published a report that predicts by 2030, the UK will need battery capacity of around 110 GWh per annum, the equivalent of six gigafactories. Recent gigafactory announcements in the UK by AESC and Tata Group have built excitement about the potential to create a new, dynamic and highly skilled battery industry in the UK. With huge investment needed for the other four gigafactories, we look forward to the government’s mission is to create a strong, stable and pro-business economy, with the UK remaining an attractive destination for investment for the automotive industry. Finally, the Government have also suggested six things to fix the NHS, one being mobile lung cancer screening trucks for testing people at supermarkets, sports centres and football grounds. Last year I visited the facility that builds these screening trailers in Leicestershire and saw firsthand the workmanship that goes into building these by hand from the skilled workforce. The UK can be proud of our commercial vehicle manufacturing from small electric vehicles, large trucks and medical trailers – and with a clear strategy, it will continue to thrive.

Not all types of electric vehicles will have the same success in the market. “The plug-in hybrid is a transition technology that will be quickly replaced by battery-powered electric as range improves,” Mr. Lenox asserts. In terms of manufacturing, the hybrid plug-ins - built by legacy automakers like GM and Ford - consist of two systems. “You are building an internal combustion engine and an electric battery. There is no bending of the cost curve to make that cheaper than a pure EV. As range improves and the charging infrastructure improves, the logic of the plug-in hybrid goes away.” https://lnkd.in/eS59kP2h

Stellantis, Chinese firm CATL plan $4bn battery plant in Spain. By Valentin Bontemps with Frederique Pris in Paris - Madrid (AFP) Car giant Stellantis and Chinese manufacturer CATL said Tuesday they would build a $4.3-billion factory to make electric vehicle batteries in Spain, the latest bid to boost Europe's troubled EV drive. They said they aim to start production by the end of 2026 at the site in the northern city of Zaragoza. It "could reach up to 50 GWh capacity, subject to the evolution of the electrical market in Europe and continued support from authorities in Spain and the European Union", the companies said in a statement. The two firms signed an agreement in 2023 to produce battery parts for the manufacture of electric vehicles in Europe. CATL, which has received robust financial support from Beijing, has launched two other European factories, in Germany and Hungary. Its chief executive Robin Zeng met late on Monday with Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, ahead of the announcement of the 4.1-billion-euro deal. In a message on X, the Socialist premier thanked the presidents of the two firms for their "firm commitment" to Spain, adding he was "very pleased". During a visit to China in September, Sanchez urged the European Union to "reconsider" a plan to impose tariffs on Chinese electric cars, calling for a "compromise" between the economic powerhouses. Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo called the announcement "excellent news for industry and employment in our country". Spain has been playing a growing role in European vehicle production, assembling 1.87 million cars in 2023 -- the second-biggest producer in the continent after Germany, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. - Bumpy patch for carmakers - The announcement comes at a turbulent time in the car industry as countries seek to switch to low-carbon electric vehicles to curb the climate crisis. Sweden's financially strained electric car battery maker Northvolt last month announced the resignation of its chief executive Peter Carlsson. That came hours after the company sought bankruptcy protection in the United States. The company said in September it was slashing 1,600 jobs -- a quarter of its staff -- and suspending the expansion of its site as it struggled with strained finances and a slowdown in demand. The company had been seen as a cornerstone of European attempts to catch up with China and the United States in the production of battery cells, a crucial component of lower-emission cars. Stellantis's former chief executive Carlos Tavares also resigned on December 1, with the company signalling differences over how to save the group's slumping profits. Like other auto groups, Stellantis has blamed competition from China and the difficult transition to electric cars for much of its troubles. https://lnkd.in/dS2vcXMC

I was pleased for the opportunity to speak with Lisa Xing for her story on what low-cost EVs from Chinese automakers could mean for Canada. A complex situation for sure, but we need to ensure that we do not simply equate the sticker price of the vehicle for its ‘cost.’ We need to better understand the TRUE cost of these vehicles. - Was their production subsidized, providing them an advantage over incumbent automakers? - Can the vehicles really be produced and sold at the indicated price points or are these loss-leaders from new market entrants looking to capture market share? - What are the environmental, safety and social ‘costs’ that have gone into the production of these vehicles? That last point is crucial. Yes, we want to see Canadians transition to EVs to reduce their personal emissions, but we have to consider the total lifecycle impact of these vehicles and their constituent components. This is where Canada has a significant advantage. Canada is already home to abundant supplies of the critical minerals required to equip the clean energy transition. And we have clean energy to power their extraction, processing and production. Coupled with an already strong automotive industry, that is continuing to further develop with domestic battery and component facilities, Canada has an opportunity to be a global leader in low-carbon EV and battery production. What Canada needs now, is to focus on the extraction and processing of these critical minerals in a safe, sustainable and socially responsible manner in order to feed this burgeoning industry here, and with our largest trading partners. Certainly, there will be a cost to doing this, but let’s ensure we look beyond the window sticker to see the true cost if we don’t. https://lnkd.in/gArvVksQ
