I had the honor of presenting a paper titled "Project induced displcaement and resettlement policy in Nepal” at the International Conference on Displacement Justice: Global challenges, issues, and strategies. The conference was held in silguri, India. It brought together scholars, policymakers, researcher, practitioners and distinguished judges from around the world to discuss critical issues surrounding forced displacement and equitable remedies. Representing Nepal we discussed on the topic project induced displacement of nepal and its effects on communities of nepal. From the book, "To Kill A Democracy", by Debashish Roy Chowdhury and John Keane - India's healthy life expectancy (HALE) is 60.5 similar to Ethiopia (60.1) and Rwanda (59.8), but lags behind Nepal (61.5), Iraq (63.3), Bangladesh (64.4), Palestine (64.4), Brazil (65), Vietnam (65.7), Sri Lanka (66.8) and China (68.4). Much more needs to be done on this front but our spends on this area are not encouraging. As the authors rightly say, democracy cannot be truly participative versus being performative at the time of elections where somebody votes and then gets on with their life, without healthcare delivering good outcomes and being accessible.  One more stat - an estimated 39 mn Indians fell into poverty yearly as a result of medical expenses per a 2011 Lancet study. By 2017 this has risen to 55 mn per year.
