It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years since we sounded the alarm at DCN. As you likely know, DCN was purpose-built to advance the future for premium publishers who trust us to understand and advocate for high-quality news and entertainment. Back then, in 2014, as the digital advertising industry was booming – often growing by 15-20% per year – we noticed something disturbing. Almost all of the incremental revenue growth was being captured by just two companies: Google and Facebook. And it wasn’t just because they were simply competing better in the advertising business – it was due to unprecedented access to data, what many now rightly call surveillance advertising. And that brings us to why we’re here today: the adtech antitrust case, United States vs. Google... A thriving 4th estate is paramount for a healthy democracy.
Today, Stagwell issued an open letter calling for advertisers to reinvest in news. The letter — part of our Future of News initiative — went into print in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, USA TODAY, POLITICO, and New York Post, among others: https://hubs.li/Q02QYclm0 It's time to do away with brand safety myths surrounding news and facilitate the return to open, free-flowing information. Doing so is good for brand growth as much as it is for the future of our democracy, as I argue in my new op-ed in The Drum, which you can read here: https://hubs.li/Q02QYvqQ0 Share the open letter with your networks, and join us and our global publisher coalition this Thursday when we take #FutureofNews to London: https://hubs.li/Q02QYtTg0

What is a DSP? What is a "walled garden"? What is the "open internet"? These are some of the topics I cover in the video below. In a business as complicated as advertising, there tends to be so much jargon thrown around it can be confusing for people outside the business... And, even some of those who are inside the business. But, these terms are used in every single article from the trades these days, so here is me explaining them with Tyler Simmons sweet graphical work.

Is everything in the media truthful, factual, unbiased, objective, and free of commercial considerations? Much of the media is not really about the truth. Much of what is in the media is about entertainment and selling advertising.

Sometimes the basic definitions in the adtech industry are elusive. Our founder Keith Gooberman runs through the basics around: What is a DSP? What is the open internet? What is a walled garden? For those new in the industry or people who just want to reconfirm their knowledge, this is the video to watch.

As digital marketing evolves, so does the regulatory landscape. Regulators are not just looking at content anymore; they're looking into how platforms manage and display that content. From mandatory disclosures to advertising practices, the enforcement is rigorous and aimed at protecting consumer rights.

Regarding Government allegations of the industry ‘colluding’ against right wing media & political bias: To those who haven’t watched July 10th US Congressional Hearing (link below) hosted by Jim Jordon… *Representative Nadler described the hearing as a politically motivated witch-hunt’. *Preeminent legal expert Professor Waller patiently explained it did not meet the threshold of antitrust legislation. https://lnkd.in/eX6ZXuTw https://lnkd.in/eXPKMpdU Let’s all just focus on making the media landscape both effective and equitable, and let free-market forces decide where marketers invest their ad-dollars. This does not require government intervention and threatened legal action.
There is plenty going on in the USA at the moment, including a congressional hearing into GARM. I couldn't help but share my two cents. *The TL;DR* Businesses leaning into more conscious decision making of their media investment and the frameworks used to assist that process should be applauded rather than labelled. It may well be a complex journey which should be frequently reviewed and recalibrated... but it is surely impossible to argue the worth of that journey?
