The creation of the Council of the Nations and Regions is a big deal, especially for England's regions. Until now, places like the North didn't have an official "seat at the table". For example, Scotland, Wales, London and even the Cayman Islands were afforded a seat at the Brexit decision making table, while the North was left out in the cold. Central-local relationships are moving in the right direction, and if the Prime Minister and devolved leaders get this right, it could even signal the beginning of a decade of regional renewal. Of course, the Council (and others) have a huge job to do - to undo an inheritance of staggering divides and the unacceptable reality that where you live in the UK determines how well you live. It's positive their first meeting focussed on investment, as regional growth is national growth. But to be successful, we hope the Council will lead to: ➡ Stronger devolved input into UK policy ➡ Better investment in regions & nations ➡ More transparent decision making
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras and Leader of the Labour Party. Former Director of Public Prosecutions.
Today we held the first Council of the Nations and Regions. Working together, we will unlock the whole of the UK’s untapped potential to make everyone, everywhere better off.
