For National Exercise Day, our #StaffSpotlight is on Savannah Antoine - Active Campus Co-ordinator. Starting at West College Scotland last August, Savannah’s role is to promote and facilitate the delivery of sport and physical activity on campus, contributing to the health and well-being of students, staff and the community. When asked what she loves most about working at West, Savannah gave a simple two-word answer: the people. 🧡 “From the moment I joined the college community I have been warmly welcomed. Everyone I've met has been helpful while I've settled into this new role, and without the people that buy into the things I'm offering, it wouldn't be possible.” Savannah shared her top 4 tips for entering a new workplace: 1. Take the time to look after yourself. To provide your best at work, you need to look after your own wellbeing. For me, this tends to be physical activity, but I know this isn’t for everyone. For others it could be reading a book. Find what makes you feel good. 2. Get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable, constantly challenge yourself to try new things out with your comfort zone. 3. Listen completely – make sure someone feels heard when communicating. Alongside this, when surrounded with so much experience, really value the amount that you can learn from talking to colleagues. 4. You either win or you learn. If we don’t experience any difficulties in our life, we will not grow. Challenge yourself to think differently and overcome any barriers you face.

I hold the energy of hundreds of people. Recently, that’s meant over 100 students studying the Sah Method in my role as assistant teacher and executive of certification, alongside over 100 members at my gym, and engaging with hundreds more—students, teachers, and youth workers across the Geelong region—as a mentor and advocate for child and adolescent wellbeing. All of it coexisting. All of it demanding my regulation, my presence, my instincts, and my stamina in ways I didn’t know were possible. This is what it means to carry responsibility in a way that stretches beyond the individual—to feel not just the weight of others’ needs, but the immense privilege of supporting them, standing beside them, and in doing so, standing with myself. To embody this work, to be this work, I must be unwavering in my integrity. Integrity isn’t just about doing what’s right in the moment—it’s about knowing, deep within myself, what is true, and staying connected to that truth in every interaction, no matter how challenging, no matter how tiring. It’s about being consistent in my efforts, even when it’s tempting to collapse under the sheer volume of demands placed on me. It’s the quiet commitment to myself that when I show up, I show up fully, anchored in who I am, grounded in what I know, and unwavering in how I act. And yet, this requires a softening, a stillness amidst the noise. It requires the ability to listen—not just to others, but to the rhythm of my own heart, to the hum of the room, to the spaces between words. How does this apply to service? In everything we do for others, we must first do for ourselves. In the giving, we must not lose ourselves. And so, to truly serve, we must be conscious of our capacity—how much we can offer without becoming hollow. When we live from a place of integrity, our work—whether it’s teaching, mentoring, or simply being in the room—has a power that doesn’t come from force, but from being fully, unapologetically, who we are. That is the quiet revolution of service. And it starts by standing firmly within ourselves.

Work-life balance (or my personally preferred term work-life integration), is front-of-mind for so many employees. In Student Affairs/Higher education work, while work demands can present challenges in achieving this there are also beautiful opportunities for the intersection of family and work-family - through spending time on campus, engaging with the campus community, and attending campus events. Not only can this be enriching for our families, it is also appreciated by students, and other community members as they connect with us holistically not just as leaders, but as people. In our work as administrators, it's important for us to consider how we infuse family values and extend support for parents and caretakers (and uncles, aunts, godparents, furparents, and other forms of family) as they balance life commitments, and determine appropriate ways and spaces to engage their loved ones in the life of the campus (if they are interested in doing so). Kudos and appreciation to my friend and colleague Alexandria White, Ed.D. who has created the most supportive Facebook community of Student Affairs Moms to connect and reinforce the values and navigation of work life balance, integration and harmony (and all other things about parenting and being an SA pro). We need more thought leadership and community from this lens of looking at our team members and talent as whole people. Please share your perspective in the comments. As an employee - how have you been most understood and supported as a leader who cares for your family? How has your campus/supervisor/colleagues reinforced a campus/workplace environment that embraces family as an important extension of you as an employee? As a supervisor or colleague - how have you supported these efforts on your team? Excited to be on a campus where my family is valued as much as I am. My family transitioned to campus and Pittsburgh as a new city just a couple of months ago, and in that time I cannot count how many community members including the President, Cabinet colleagues, Student Life team members, Spiritan priests, students, facilities and housekeeping staff, and more have inquired about my transition and offered genuine care and support. I wish this holistic care for every employee. Thanks to Duquesne Marketing & Communications for the beautiful family photo, representing the many moments we'll have on campus together. This week's ~BLOG is all about Dos and Don'ts of a Work Party: Navigating Office Social Events. Work parties can be a fantastic opportunity to socialize with colleagues, celebrate milestones, and build stronger professional relationships. However, it's important to remember that these events are still professional settings, and how you conduct yourself can have a lasting impact on your career. Here’s a guide to the dos and don'ts of attending a work party. The Dos 1. Do Attend If you’re invited to a work party, make an effort to attend. It shows that you’re engaged and willing to participate in company culture. Your presence can help strengthen your relationships with colleagues and superiors. 2. Do Dress Appropriately Dress for the occasion. If the party has a specific dress code, adhere to it. If not, aim for smart casual or business casual attire. It’s better to be slightly overdressed than too casual, as this maintains a professional image. 3. Do Mingle Use the opportunity to mingle and network with colleagues you might not interact with regularly. Engage in light, positive conversations. Introduce yourself to new faces and make an effort to connect with different people. Want to continue reading? Whilst we collect dozens of Lead School case studies, we also have an ever-growing library of case studies collected from our Partner Schools who have successfully completed the Behaviour Hubs programme. There really is no better way to discover the impact of Behaviour Hubs. You can sort by setting type and theme (based on DfE's behaviour guidance) to explore school contexts most similar to your own. Discover Behaviour Hubs case studies: https://lnkd.in/eEDJbtfi #behaviour #schoolleadership #collaboration
I can’t think of a better way to end the working week than reading through our #BehaviourHubs Lead School and MAT Case Studies - our inbox is full of them! Via the Case Studies, our Lead Schools are sharing their reflections of their time on the programme, detailing the invaluable support they have provided to hundreds of settings, and the positive impact on countless pupils. It is evident that the programme has been at the centre of building new and sustainable networks all across England, that’ll form just a part of its legacy in the sector. There is so much to share, but to pick just one snippet… “For Perryfields Primary PRU, the Behaviour Hubs programme has been by far one of the most exciting and worthwhile programmes that we as a school have been involved with… The pupils were given the opportunity to feel success and show pride in their achievements whilst sharing their work with visitors.” Huge thanks to Perryfields PRU and all 60 of our Behaviour Hubs Lead Schools and MATs across England.. now on to the next Case Study..!

Working a job that is not a good fit for you is painful. So painful, sometimes, that your health suffers. You question your purpose, you feel like a failure, you are exhausted all of the time and you sometimes have panic attacks. This is me back in 2013 when I was teaching 3rd grade social studies here in Brooklyn. I was actually hired as an intern, but got bumped up to a full time teacher after two weeks with no prior teaching experience or degree. It was the hardest thing I've ever done professionally. I remember being at a concert at Terminal 5 that winter in Manhattan with two friends and I was falling asleep while standing up. It was a Friday night and I was 23! That should never happen! Soon after that, I had my first and thankfully only panic attack at work and left early that day. I did my best to make it through the school year, and was majorly burnt out by the end of June. Leaving teaching kick started my journey to finding coaching. I never looked back. If you are tired of feeling exhausted at work, with lack of purpose, and know that your job is not right for you, this is your wake up call to get out. Your health and whole future depends on it! DM me "I'm ready" if you want to hear more about my tips for successful quitting. #careercoach #lifecoach #careerdevelopment #career #careeradvice #quityourjob #whywait #thetimeisnow #foryourhealth #coach #coaching

This is one of the tools I use as a coach. I use the online version most of the time. My clients find it thought-provoking and straightforward. I find it a solid starting point when people struggle with where to focus first. It is a simple yet TRULY effective tool to get to the heart of what my clients want and need in their lives to be better, to be more purposeful. #coaching #assessments

Balanced Card Sorts is committed to helping #highered professionals prioritize their #wellbeing and #worklifebalance as they work so hard to support their students' success. We're grateful to have had the opportunity to present at last month's National Career Development Association Annual Conference. Our session, "Helping the helpers: Reflect on your own priorities so you can help others do the same," drew nearly 70 higher ed and career counseling professionals, and was full of deep reflection and meaningful conversations about ways to prioritize well-being and address barriers that often get in the way of taking care of ourselves. We're also thrilled to be leading a special well-being session in November at the New England College Health Association's Annual Meeting in Portland, Maine (our home state)! This year's meeting theme is: "Reclaiming the Joy of College Health," and we're looking forward to helping #collegehealth and well-being professionals carve out some time to sort through their own well-being and work-life balance needs. As #highered and #studentaffairs professionals dive into preparations for welcoming students back to campus, it's critical they also take stock of what THEY need for a healthy work-life balance in the upcoming academic year to help avoid burnout, and maintain the joy of supporting #collegestudents in their academic and personal journeys. If you're in the New England area, we hope you'll consider joining us at our session at the New England College Health Association meeting in beautiful Portland! 🙌Career Camp Session B, Day 7 was bursting with inspiration, employment education, and job exploration! 🔷Our career campers delved into various topics, giving them valuable insights into different kinds of jobs, potential career paths, and the realities of working life. They expanded their vocabulary and learned keywords related to each job, equipping them with the skills needed for future success. 🔷A highlight of the day was the engaging self-advocacy communication activity, where they played "The Bean Game: Living on a 20-Bean Salary." This game taught them how to manage their “income” based on life circumstances, values, and goals. Campers learned essential skills such as budgeting, paying yourself first, money tracking, and distinguishing between wants and needs. 🔷Throughout the day, they practiced their conversational skills while working snack cart sales and mastered their technical skills through custodian duties. In the classroom, they participated in interactive activities, supporting and encouraging each other every step of the way. We are incredibly proud of all they have learned and accomplished so far, and we can't wait to see what they'll achieve next! It’s not too late to register your students aged 14-21 with an IEP or 504 Plan for our upcoming sessions. Each session runs for 2 weeks, and a separate Vocational Rehabilitation referral is needed for each one.
