The truth about DEI committees….     DEI committees have the potential to be a force for good but when they get it wrong, they can end up isolating the very employees they're trying to support.   A common misconception is that being from an underrepresented background automatically makes you a good candidate for the DEI committee.       I can relate because I was clueless about DEI but was asked to spearhead it in companies I joined.       Like me, most people have no intention of joining, they often say yes out of fear or feeling like they’re letting people down if they don’t.    But you join and wholeheartedly go into it believing you can make a difference. But then your ideas get shut down because DEI discussions happen in a DEI silo.   Even worse, you’re now branded by colleagues or the boss as too ‘woke’. Suddenly, you feel isolated when the whole point is to make you (and people like you) feel more included. So, if you feel your DEI committee is too woke.  Please remember they probably joined the company just wanting to do their job in Sales, Operations or Tech and go home. They probably had no intention of being the spokesperson of DEI. They are just trying to help.

The IR Society’s ‘Voted Awards’, included Best Newcomer to IR (individual), Best IRO (individual), Best Overall Company IR (company), Best Investor Engagement (investor), and uses Extel data from the 2024 Developed Europe Executive Team Survey (Small, Mid and Large-Cap) to help determine winners. The number of voting firms increased 11% YoY and the number of voters saw an increase of over 13%. There were 205 nominated companies and 374 nominated individuals. The number of votes increased by almost 10% since 2023 for the Developed Europe survey. 2024 Developed Europe Executive Team: 1,006 companies and 2,206 individuals were nominated across 31 sectors across Europe. It was an honor to be recognized for my board service by the Puget Sound Business Journal at their Directors of the Year awards last night. In accepting my award, I had the chance to share a little more about my interest in and commitment to DEI. While each of the organizations I advise has unique, industry-specific opportunities, a common denominator for each of them is the opportunity to foster cultures of growth and improve their performance by investing in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Companies that lead on DEI aren't just doing the right thing, they're setting themselves up for stronger financial performance, greater innovation, and the ability to connect with a more diverse customer base.
