Independent Women’s Forum: Dr. Keri D. Ingraham: Politically Unstable: The Battle For Universal School Choice https://lnkd.in/gsY7cTeX There are pockets of amazing innovation happening around our country in K-12 education, but they are far too rare. . . . In 2022, two states, Arizona and West Virginia, enacted universal school choice, creating a free market K-12 education landscape. This allows parents to take their taxpayer money to the educational provider of their choice that will best serve their children. In 2023, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah each passed universal or near-universal school choice laws. Thus far in 2024, the momentum isn’t slowing as Alabama has joined these states, bringing the total to 11, with more on the way!

Investing in the learning and development of teachers means investing in the community. Creating a pipeline of success is what happens when community organizations comes together and open the access to resources.
In our refreshed Blueprint coming soon, we explore how high-performing education systems work hard to bring people and institutions across the community together on behalf of young people. This piece by Dr. Cassandra Herring of the Branch Alliance for Educator Diversity offers examples of just that. "Trough community partnerships, we can build a pipeline of educators equipped to thrive in today’s classrooms on day one, delivering a more inclusive and equitable education system for all." https://lnkd.in/gqXevdDh

Two years ago, the National Partnership for Student Success and Accelerate launched initiatives to address pandemic-related learning loss and improve student well-being. By focusing on high-dosage tutoring and evidence-based strategies, they are making a meaningful impact on student success. In states like Minnesota, Mississippi, and New York, AmeriCorps members are essential in providing tutoring and coaching to tackle chronic absenteeism and learning gaps. However, proposed cuts to AmeriCorps pose a significant threat to these vital efforts. Professor Robert Balfanz and his colleague reflect on this important work and its implications for the future of education. https://lnkd.in/ezF8hGJk

New York’s latest test scores show why families are fleeing the public schools QUOTE: It’s easy to see why the State Education Department stalled on releasing the latest English and math test scores for grades 3-8, and why New Yorkers won’t get the final (whitewashed) results until November: They show fewer than half of all kids statewide scoring grade-level-proficient or better in English; just 52% in math. And, for those that took the science exam, even worse: just 35%. The kids took the multiple-choice tests back in April and May: SED has no excuse for the absurdly long time in releasing even preliminary results; officials’ protest that they’re trying to produce them “as quickly as possible to improve classroom instruction” is total smoke. All the tests do now is help expose the failure of public schools to educate our kids (especially those in poor and minority neighborhoods) — which is why SED, the Regents and the unions are pushing to ditch standardized testing entirely. The educrats should be so ashamed they’d commit seppuku.Instead, Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, Regents Chancellor Lester Young & Co. just push for ever-greater school spending. New York leads the nation in education spending but ranks near the bottom when it comes to student achievement. Families fed up with New York’s public schools are fleeing to private academies, charter schools, home-schooling — and other states. Good for them: With state leaders bent on doing nothing but hide the truth while sucking up ever more cash, those parents would be insane to stay.

How we'll get to integration and education equity: We've worked with fellow education justice advocates to craft a thoughtful strategy for ushering in an era where every student has a fair and equal shot at quality education. Our approach combines state policy changes, comprehensive research, and proactive advocacy. Why does this matter? History shows us that these tools are incredibly effective. For instance, 12 years of court-ordered desegregation dramatically narrowed the Black/white education gap - until the late 80s when rapid desegregation followed the court's loosened oversight. Transforming our schools into reflections of the diversity of our country is necessary for a healthy democracy. We are fighting for schools that are not only diverse but also rich in resources and opportunities, where every student can thrive. Dive into our roadmap linked below, and stay tuned for our detailed research and state policy agendas soon! https://lnkd.in/g9vt3EQz

NJSACC: New Jersey’s Afterschool and Out-of-School Time (OST) Professional Network is highlighting the importance of supporting afterschool and out-of-school time professionals and programs across The Garden State. In this video, Assemblyman Michael Venezia honors this incredible national event! Why Afterschool Programs Matter Afterschool programs offer a safe, enriching environment for kids once the school day ends. From boosting academic achievement to fostering social skills and creativity, these programs provide critical support for students and working families alike. In New Jersey, thousands of children benefit from these programs, and with more resources, even more kids could have access to life-changing opportunities. Lights On Afterschool is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on these programs and their essential role in our communities. According to the Afterschool Alliance, participation in afterschool programs is linked to improved reading and math scores, better school attendance, and stronger support for working families. In fact, for every child currently in an afterschool program in New Jersey, three more are waiting for a spot. Events like Lights On Afterschool help raise awareness and support for expanding these opportunities. Learn more at: https://lnkd.in/dNeGjpzG cc: Afterschool Alliance
