What should you trust - polls, betting markets, or gut feelings? Trick question! Or, more specifically, a false choice. There is no single source of truth when it comes to predicting the future. All stats (and gut feelings) come with their own sets of biases. Betting lines are set to generate the maximum betting (and/or market-maker winning). Polls are of stated opinions. Gut feelings likely come with the most bias of all. SO what's the answer? Much less satisfying, these all just serve as data points that shed light on probabilities at a point in time.
Are betting markets the best way to predict an election?

Disclaimer (I feel this is necessary these days): Please do keep in mind this post does not look at morality, values, policies, etc. Only process of running a campaign from the sales & business angle. If you are easily triggered or expect something that comforts your taste for either candidate on a political level, your time might be better spent reading something else 😉 This article explains really well why I've been telling friends for the last 2+ months the Democrats were probably in for a painful loss. Not because I'm an expert in US politics or because I secretly hoped the world would be getting four more years of that guy from Home Alone 2 but because I understand sales and this was a terrible pitch with ridiculously subpar execution. Their campaign did not connect with the expectations of a crowd large enough to secure a win, similar to having the right total addressable market for the size of the business you are trying to build. Moreover, when selling something, you must understand the needs of your prospect. If your pitch relies more on telling them that your competitors are terrible people than on showing what your product does for them, your chances of winning are slim. Worse still, a "holier than thou" kind of approach risks blinding you to your own limitations. If you rely on vast amounts of money to compete with a brand that is recognizable and around which supporters can rally, you will waste a lot of it trying to generate momentum rather than sustainable buy-in. Lastly, and that's something that's really hard to compete with because sometimes the turn of events doesn't give you a "chance" to show it: you have to believe in what you are selling to the point of being willing to risk your life for it. To die on that hill. Trump showed that spirit when he was shot and was then seen pumping his fist screaming "Fight! Fight! Fight!" to his supporters. It seemed to me that his goal came before his own safety and that's as strong a commitment to winning the campaign as you can get.
