This week, we have Wendy Wedge who will be taking over to talk about zinc layers and sacrificial protection. “The process concludes once the reaction between iron and zinc has ceased, and the item is removed from the galvanizing bath, fully coated with a layer of free zinc. “Coating thicknesses are normally determined by the steel thickness and are set out in EN ISO 1461. There are three exceptions to this rule: the first results in a slightly thinner coating, while the other two lead to a thicker coating. “Zinc corrodes in preference to steel and sacrifices itself to protect the steel, hence hot dip galvanizing will provide this sacrificial protection”.
