Centre Director, Shaun Fitzgerald, gives his views on how close we are to seeing #geoengineering being discussed within the UNFCCC negotiations at #COP29. Geoengineering, or climate interventions, are a contentious issue with many saying that it is merely a distraction from what our true goal should be - rapid emissions reduction. The Centre for Climate Repair is in strong agreement that emissions reduction should be our main focus and we hope to never need the deployment of intervention techniques. However, if emissions reduction continues to be not taken seriously by large emitters, then we need to think outside the box and have a well-researched backup plan. This depends largely on geoengineering research being accepted by policymakers and the general public. If research is stagnated, then if we ever need to implement technologies to keep global temperatures down, it may mean the deployment of technologies that have not been robustly tested - environmentally and ethically. To avoid this, we need to start having these conversations and making geoengineering research as part of the discussions. #ClimateIntervention #EmissionReduction

ICYMI - spot-on blog from IMechE's Lydia Amarquaye CEng MIMechE - very much aligned with the findings of our "Adapting Industry to Withstand Rising Temperatures and Future Heatwaves" report, as well as "The Hot Reality: Living in a +50C World" report, and this week's "Greening Education" outcomes from #COP29. Plenty for us to think about in #engineering and act upon between now and the #education sessions at #COP30 next year. We're half way through the enlightening IStructE Climate Emergency Conference. It's an incredible opportunity to engage with thought leaders and innovators who are reshaping our industry in response to the climate crisis. It is really interesting to find out the future of carbon standards, not just in the UK but across the world. It's becoming increasingly clear that these standards are not just a 'nice-to-have', but are set to become the new norm in the construction industry. The discussions have revolved around how we can play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and creating a sustainable future. #IStructE #ClimateEmergency #CarbonStandards #Sustainability #Engineering

LP Structural Engineering places the utmost importance on staying at the forefront of sustainability within the construction industry. While structural engineers are often overlooked in sustainability discussions (for instance, structural engineering components have minimal influence on BREEAM assessments), we believe it’s crucial to continually expand our knowledge and contribute to this vital area.

This reckless lye-dumping experiment is a testament to the desperation and shortsightedness that often accompany geoengineering proposals. Instead of turning to such high-risk strategies, we should focus on realistic and evidence-based environmental practices, ensuring a healthier and more stable environment for future generations.

We heartily agree with Dr Simon Bullock's assessment: He said the results showed the "major and immediate benefits of wind-assist technologies" and urged other shipping companies to take note. "To tackle climate change, the shipping industry needs to cut its use of fossil fuel rapidly.” With thanks to Tom Singleton and the BBC #sustainability #windpropulsion #shipsandshipping #engineering #navalarchitecture https://lnkd.in/dxCDDnHe

My colleague Madeleine Rawlins articulates a clear and inspiring vision for the future of the UK’s #infrastructure sector in this must-read article: https://mottm.ac/41n3UJs Even with the challenges encountered at COP29, her emphasis on ambitious targets and the engineering #skills vital for achieving substantial emissions reductions is both motivating and reassuring. The #engineering sector’s role in delivering sustainable infrastructure will be more crucial than ever to ensure a positive trajectory for the next decade. It’s heartening to see such a strong dedication to #sustainability and practical actions to achieve it.
