Tanzania is a country located in East Africa known for its vast wilderness areas, rich cultural heritage, and significant archaeological findings. It borders Kenya and Uganda to the north, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south. The Indian Ocean lies to its east. Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most famous national parks and the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. Geography Tanzania’s geography is incredibly diverse, including the plains of the Serengeti, the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, and the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. The country also features many large lakes, the most significant being Lake Victoria on its northern border, Lake Tanganyika on its western border, and Lake Nyasa in the south. History The area now known as Tanzania has been inhabited by various indigenous groups for thousands of years. The coast of Tanzania was historically a significant contact point for trade between the interior of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, India, and Persia, leading to a mix of cultures and the development of the Swahili language. Tanzania was colonized first by the Germans and then by the British after World War I. The mainland, then called Tanganyika, gained independence from Britain in 1961. Zanzibar, which had become a British protectorate in the late 19th century after centuries of Arab domination, became independent in 1963. In 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Politics and Government Tanzania is a unitary presidential republic. The President of Tanzania serves as both the head of state and the head of government. Since its foundation, Tanzania has maintained a stable political environment compared to many of its neighbors, with regular democratic elections, although the same party (Chama Cha Mapinduzi) has been in power since independence. Economy Tanzania’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, which accounts for more than one-quarter of the GDP, provides 85% of exports, and employs about 80% of the workforce. The country also has vast mineral resources, including diamonds, gold, and natural gas. Tourism is a growing sector, with millions visiting Tanzania to go on safaris in the Serengeti or visit the beaches of Zanzibar. Society and Culture Tanzania is home to around 120 different ethnic groups, speaking various languages and following an array of traditions and customs. The official languages are Swahili and English. Swahili is widely used in governmental, educational, and commercial settings and acts as a unifying language among the diverse population. Environmental Initiatives Tanzania is known for its commitment to conservation. The government manages several wildlife reserves and national parks, which are designed to protect the country’s natural heritage, including its vast populations of wild animals.

Happy Independence Day to Tanzania! One of the heirs of the city-states of the ancient Swahili Federation, independent since December 9 1961, and since April 26 1964 also the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. A union soaring with success at breakneck speed thanks to the recent leadership of presidents Magufuli and Hassan, begetting the accelerated rollout of massive multimodal infrastructure to connect the country internally, regionally and with the Indian Ocean economic powerhouses of China and India which have become its main economic partners and are making Tanzania a hub for trade and energy production, with thriving tech and space sectors. Increasingly a hub for manufacturing too, with the completion of massive special economic zones boosting automobile production, the tech sector, textiles and tourism thanks to several innovative smart city models centered on government and on local heritage respectively. All resulting in billions of USD in FDI flowing to the country now each year, beating the government's own forecasts regularly now. Most importantly and telling of Tanzania's trajectory, the nation is the world leader in extreme poverty reduction, having reduced its rate from more than 86.1% to 49% in 2000-2015, and now around 30%. Tanzania can and will become the first African country to eradicate extreme poverty over the next 10 years (just as China achieved in 2020). These achievements, past, present and future, coupled with a crucial strategic location have made Tanzania a partner of choice for the rising powers of the Indian Ocean and as well as for the global powers of Europe and North America, and a rising economic and political force in its own right. In so doing, the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar is thus regaining gradually the luster of its ancestors of the Kilwa Kingdom and the Swahili Federation. A nation with self-knowledge is always reborn! #TanzaniaRising #BetterGovernance #NewSwahiliFederation

Botswana's success in becoming an upper middle-income economy with a GDP per capita between US$8,000-9,000 was not just the result of the visionary leadership of its first president Seretse Khama. Rather, Seretse Khama was but the latest in a continuous line of local kings and leaders who had prioritized the nation, its people and sovereignty. Khama was literally the heir to the throne of the Tswana, and his father and forefathers before him had played a shrewd diplomatic-military game to preserve their sovereignty, playing off British imperial authorities against their agent Cecil Rhodes who, at the time, was rampaging throughout all of Southern Africa. The Tswana kings and leaders negotiated with the British Crown to become a direct protectorate of their empire, under the name Bechuanaland, and thus keep Cecil Rhodes out and preserve their African traditions and political structures, especially their ownership of their land. Upon regaining independence as Bostwana (Land of the Tswana), Seretse Khama was then able to leverage this heritage of intact African social and governing traditions to draft a vision for political modernization and economic development, and then implement it as president with broad popular support, in particular the land reform and local property rights regime, and the strategy of leveraging local mineral resources to jumpstart growth. This successful example of development based on a core of African identity, social cohesion and sovereignty is the most powerful lesson the Botswana story holds for all of Africa.
