In partnership with the University of Southampton, we have delivered purpose-driven projects that support its mission to provide world-class education, groundbreaking research, and an outstanding student experience. From the Boldrewood Innovation Campus, a hub for pioneering science and life sciences research, to enhanced sports facilities at the Jubilee Sports Centre on the Highfield Campus, our work reflects a shared commitment to creating sustainable, state-of-the-art spaces that empower students, researchers, and the wider community to thrive. Across each project, we have worked to employ local people and support charities. One example is our work with Southampton Sight, a small independent charity. We helped to renovate their garden and other areas to improve accessibility and create a welcoming space, while also raising funds to support activities for young people. https://lnkd.in/ewhdxsu3 #ConstructionSouth #Partnerships #HigherEducation #LifeSciences #Collaboration

IntoUniversity provides local learning centres where young people are inspired to achieve. They exist to help young people growing up in Britain’s least privileged neighbourhoods who have always faced an uphill struggle. IntoUniversity has a 20-year track record and is currently operating in 22 UK towns and cities. At each IntoUniversity centre, students aged 7-18 participate in a holistic programme of support, designed to raise aspirations, broaden horizons, improve attainment, develop soft skills and provide experience of the world of work, ultimately helping them reach university or professional careers that would not be easily available to them. One of the newest locations for IntoUniversity is Leicester, which has come to the city thanks to a partnership between the University of Leicester and De Montfort University; supported by a grant provided by the Randal Charitable Foundation. BIG FIRST STEP - THINKING OUT LOUD. This is a big first step for Livingstone Tanzania Trust on their journey to #ShiftThePower. The international development world has forever mostly been a paternalistic top-down system where the global north knows what is best for the global south. If you think about it, that is shockingly patronising and assumes the global north's systems of work/life are suitable for replication. (rhetorical) LTT has always listened to the needs of the community to determine the work we have done and we have asked for their support in doing that work on the basis if they did not support they did not want. To date we have only ever done projects they want, need and appreciated This next step is not to do "our" projects at all, but to support "their" projects. It is more than a subtle shift in words, it is a shift in respect, in attitude, in control. Yes we will hold some power. We still have to report back to our donors on how their resources are spent and ensure that their funds are utilised wisely, and that the programmes are monitored, evaluated and lessons are learned along the way and programmes tweaked as needed. But we will be sharing that accountability with local stakeholders. It is going to be an interesting journey. please read below.....
TRYING TO FLIP THE POWER DYNAMIC Our founder and managing director Julian Page this week met with representatives of different departments from the town council to present the findings of a 2 month research programme by our programmes manager Abdallah Njayagha into the challenges being faced by young people when trying to access a quality education. (Sadly Abdi was unwell and unable to present himself) The aim for the charity is to understand what actions are being taken by these stakeholders to address those challenges and what challenges THEY face when try to resolve them. We will hold the same meetings with each of the target communities over the coming days and we will then be well placed to offer the support they need. Armed with this knowledge we will ask to join their 'development table' to offer our resources to their plans. In this way we hope to strengthen the stakeholder team and enable progress with funds and resources not available to them. This approach is part of our evolution as a charity and a step past consultation, collaboration and participation towards coproduction.

**This event took place on March 8, 2022** Over the years past, I’ve always had a deep feeling of compassion for the less privileged not because I am rich or have it all, but because I know and understand what it feels like to be in such condition. I usually think of how they cope with the challenging situation of the economy, the state of affairs of things and how adaptation to life’s circumstances in general can be for them. In a bid to bring this innovation into actualization, I decided to create a team and subsequently tagged it as “Worldsmile ”. This team consisting of eight well devoted persons, who also share the same thoughts as I do, joined me in planning a great roadmap in order to reach out to less privileged children in public schools around the country. In the course of our observation, we found out that some of the children go to school without writing materials (exercise books and pen), some leave home to school without food while others cannot afford school uniforms, school socks or even foot wears. These learning materials mentioned above are very essential for every child to acquire knowledge and unavailability of these materials greatly affects the children thereby making learning process difficult. In line with achieving this lifelong goal of putting smiles on their faces, my team and I on the 8th day of March 2022 visited SAINT PETER’S (RCM) SCHOOL, Mbiabong, Anyanya, Etoi, Uyo, with some writing materials namely: (i) 31/2 carton of exercise books (ii) 4 packets of writing pen (iii) One box of pencil (iv) 3 packets of eraser The donation was however successful and a total of 504 students were beneficiaries of this materials. Each student went home smiling. It was a thing of joy seeing this little ones appreciate the little token we gave to them. We need things like this in Africa and the world at large. #charities #nonprofit #info Feel free to read the full story on my Steemit blog by checking the 2 links below: https://lnkd.in/daYDGTgf https://lnkd.in/d_3Q9yMK

As many of you will know, I am a trustee to a small grass roots charity - https://lnkd.in/ehbUBA2F ; and this year I was signed up (note that I did not sign myself up!!!) to run the Brighton Marathon to raise money to help support our charities activities for 2024 and beyond. What many of you won't know... is that I am not a runner... that I ran the London marathon in 2016 (again - raising money for Inspire Malawi) and sobbing at the end vowed never to do another one.... and that the only reason I am doing this is that the other Director of the Charity got us 4 places in the race and we couldn't find anyone else mad enough to do it for us!! I am literally dreading it!!! Inspire Malawi supports, promotes and enhances Primary and Secondary Education in the most isolated villages of Dedza and Ntcheu in the Lizulu District of Malawi (one of the poorest countries in the world). Since 2010, we have been leading groups of volunteers to the country who work hand in hand with communities to renovate and redecorate their schools - inspiring through education. As a small (I don't think the term micro would be unfair here!) charity, we are committed to raising the necessary funds for each individual project through fundraising activities, sponsorship and donations. Each project is unique. We respond to individual requests for support form Headteachers and community leaders, who contact us for a variety of reasons. Smaller projects might include the construction of a new toilet block, or redecorating of classrooms. Larger projects have seen us building from the ground up additional facilities which have included classrooms, staff rooms, libraries and storerooms. We have drilled boreholes, developed permaculture gardens and have provided free continuing professional development (CPD) courses for teachers and community leaders. Each year we raise approximately £10k - £30k, and every little really does help, as well as going directly into projects on the ground in Malawi. When I took my mum over to visit the projects in April 2023, as well as to take part in some volunteering ourselves, I was once again amazed at the amount Michelle (who founded the charity) is able to achieve with so little funding. Please do consider donating - I really will hate every second of this run.... expect tears, misery, and please know that the only thing getting me round will be knowing what a fantastic cause I am doing it for and knowing what a fantastic cause I am raising money for. Thank you for any donation you are able to give. https://lnkd.in/eEnPg8kg

Are you a fundraiser who is looking for ways to diversify funding sources? Do you want to tap into US foundations you have just now taken advantage of? The USA is the most philanthropic country in the world and can be one of the most rewarding markets for fundraising. The nearly 150,000 foundations in the United States provided $103.53 billion in 2023 - a 1.7% increase from 2022. About 25% of this amount is allocated to international causes, of which almost half finds its way to NGOs in other countries. Despite the recent economic difficulties due to the global pandemic and the heavy competition for US foundation dollars, there are significant opportunities for well-prepared NGOs to raise significant money with the right approach, amount of resources, and investment of time. In this webinar, Dr. Eva Wieners will explain how to apply for funding from US foundations as a non-US applicant and take advantage of the opportunities. https://lnkd.in/dKt9kWsh #fundraisngfromusfoundation #fundraisingsuccess #nonprofitsuccess #USFoundation #fundraisingsource

I’ve noticed that raising funds for a cause is a common go-to action for students, not only during the PYP Exhibition but also across the MYP. While fundraising is meaningful, I believe there’s so much more we can empower students to do to create lasting impacts! To expand their perspective on what action can look like, I’ve compiled a list of alternative options to present and discuss with my class that go beyond financial contributions. What are some other creative ways students can take meaningful action that don’t involve fundraising? 🌍 https://lnkd.in/d-xp-DhS #PYPExhibition #StudentAction #EducationForChange
