One thing we implemented early on with our team was a wilderness experience at Mt. LeConte Lodge which sits high atop the Smoky Mountains. Originally constructed in the 1920’s, the lodge was built as a stopover for the Great Smoky Mountain Conservation Association. The value of Mt. LeConte for us lies in the fact that it is isolated from the rest of the world. There are no roads that can take you there. The only way to get there is to earn your way up via a steep mountain climb. When you arrive, there is no electricity or natural gas, no cell phone service, and only two spouts with running water. Silence abounds. Someone took a s**t in the pool. Sometimes s**t happens. I’m here on holiday in Costa Navarino one of my favorite places in the entire world. Whole family’s here, brought my parents with us. Everyone’s having a great time. We’re chilling by the pool. All of a sudden, everyone’s got to evacuate the pool. Someone took a s*** in the pool. We’ve got to get everyone out. They’ve got to put all the cleaning products in there, more chlorine, more whatever else they’re putting in there. Obviously not an ideal situation, but s**t happens. So what in your business were you not expecting? Were you not projecting? Were you not predicting? But when s**t happens, don’t stress out. Sometimes you’ve got to evacuate. Sometimes it’s going to slow you down from getting to your goal, but sometimes s**t happens and you just got to deal with it and move forward. Not every goal is going to happen seamlessly. In fact, I can almost guarantee that you’re going to have some issues along the way. So don’t worry when s**t happens, evacuate, clean up and get back on the horse. When we work in collaboration, we build environments to thrive. We did our annual visit to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek at the weekend. Nestled in a creek at the top of the Helford River, it's surrounded by gentle waters and woodland that comes down to the shore. It's one of Cornwall's quieter attractions, so it's always a peaceful day out. I spent some time at an underground window watching one of the residents use her flippers like hands to move her through the water. Over she'd go, gently rotating as she slipped through the water. It was beautiful. So, back to collaboration. We left the seals and wandered up the leaf-strewn path under the steep woodland to where beavers have been introduced to the river. And there, under the trees, we saw a dam. The area is part of a collaboration with the Beaver Trust to teach stranded kits how to cope in the wild on their own. And all around, a new wetland was teeming with wildlife, attracted by the calmer waters. This got me thinking: 🌳 What beavers had an 'every beaver for themselves' attitude? 🌳 What if they believed that resources were scarce and each individual jealously guarded whatever they had? 🌳 What is there to learn about collaborating with others in the same industry? 🌳 What if by working with others in a spirit of abundance, we create an ecosystem for everyone to thrive? I know I wouldn't be where I am today without the help and support of my writerly friends. They're not competition - they're part of my ecosystem. Who could you reach out to today?
