Washington State Department of Commerce’s Post

Last week, Chris Lovings, Commerce’s Community Engagement Specialist in King County, attended a ribbon cutting for Island Center Homes, an exciting affordable housing development on Vashon Island. This is a demonstration project, the first of its kind in King County. The sustainable property features five separate buildings with eight studio-style units in each home with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. Each home has a common gathering room and full-sized kitchen, and two of the eight units are ADA compliant. The property will house 40 community members. Commerce proudly supported with project with $5.4 million of funding from the National Housing Trust Fund and state Housing Trust Fund. The ribbon cutting event included a property tour by Rachael Hetrick, the Island Center Homes program director, and a lineup of speakers: Chris; Kelly Rider, King County Department of Community and Human Services director; Christy Clements, Board President of Vashon HouseHold; Hilary Emmer, Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness representative; and Kari Dohn Decker, Vashon HouseHold interim executive director.

  • A group of seven people stands together, smiling and holding a large blue ribbon across a doorway. A woman in a red shawl is positioned at the center, preparing to cut the ribbon with scissors. The backdrop features a sign related to an opening event, and there are blue balloons on either side.
  • A man speaking into a microphone while holding a smartphone, dressed in a black puffer jacket. He stands next to a sign and exterior windows are visible in the background.
  • A speaker stands in front of an audience under a tent, addressing a small gathering. A sign with the logo "VHH" is visible in the background, along with outdoor furnishings and greenery, indicating a community or event setting. Tables are set up with decorations.
  • Four people are engaged in conversation under a large tent. One person, wearing a red scarf, gestures while speaking to the group. Tables are set up in the background with teal coverings and chairs arranged around them. The setting appears to be an event or gathering outdoors.
  • A pathway leads through a residential area with modern buildings on either side, featuring landscaping and small shrubs. A sign stands near the path, indicating the presence of a housing initiative. The scene is set on an overcast day, with trees visible in the background.
