The recent TFWA (Tax Free World Association) Summit in Cannes provided ample inspiration for stakeholder collaboration and for ensuring value creation for travelers. The Travel Retail channel is uniquely positioned to be the most dynamic and sought after retail channel across the globe. It will be mission critical to be remain intentional about compelling offers, penetration and conversion goals across every traveler demographic and particularly at the front line. If passenger counts have recovered and sales have not yet reached 2019 levels, then there is clearly an opportunity for an informed, well planned and long term strategic framework because the status quo is not enough. Too much has changed for the industry to rest on its laurels. We must make an honest evaluation and build on our strengths and on exemplary ways of working together. For example: A co-branded activation achieved a new benchmark at $650 CAD / hr tracked at the station and was closely split between the confectionary and spirits offer. A true win win for retailers, brands, consumers and airports and a strong nudge to keep moving forward with courage, with creativity and with shared goals in mind. We are actively modernizing our recruiting and staffing services to better align with industry objectives because quite frankly, the pain points deserve leadership and the gaps deserve expertise, all of which are readily available in the skills sets across the globe. Spain’s win last night reminded us what happens when a team finds an identity to become something much greater than the sum of its parts. Watching last night’s final unfold I was struck by what it revealed about the character of the two teams. Gareth Southgate has instilled a culture of pride and resilience to this England team, which has showed itself moments of individual brilliance from Bellingham, Saka, Watkins and Palmer. Yet Spain have something that transcends all their individual brilliance, what Guillaume Ballague called “layers”, a culture that weaves resilience, creativity, adaptability and so much more into a personality that feels whole and separate from the sum of its parts. This is what every team should aspire to, whether in sport or in business. So many organisations try to build and live their culture, but a culture has to be understood and grown on a cellular level. Gareth has done a great job in projecting his own values onto his team, but it feels skin deep. We don’t have Spain’s training infrastructure, where layers of craft are nurtured from a young age and where players and managers can work together to express a thing of beauty. This concept of layers is what is at the heart of The Human Organisation, a framework that helps businesses look at themselves as if they were a person, to find a deeper understanding of who they are and who they can be.
