Caregivers rate their day from 1 to 5, and it gives managers a chance to reach out if someone’s having a tough time. Sometimes, it’s a small thing, like finding a better parking spot or resolving a one-off issue. But those little touches show caregivers they’re supported—and that they matter. Then there’s the recognition and rewards program. Imagine getting “Caregiver of the Month” and seeing it announced in-app for everyone to celebrate. It’s no longer just a private “good job” text—it’s a real, public recognition that they can share with family and friends. It takes someone from “just a caregiver” to a professional who’s proud of what they do. These simple steps boost morale and reduce turnover, yet so many agencies leave it on the back burner. Yesterday, I attended a really inspiring webinar with some folks from Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust hosted by The Honeycomb Works. The discussion was about how to implement strategies for inclusion in a way that would have real impact. ⏰ Melissa Sabella opened by sharing that we often hear, 'we’re too busy to prioritise this', and so we thought, who better to ask ‘how do we prioritise inclusion’ than the incredibly busy nurses and midwives at the NHS. What can we all learn from what they do? 🔬 Next Róisín Fitzsimons shared the importance of being really precise when looking for evidence in the data you have around inclusion. As an example, if you only look at the numbers of people from the global majority working within the NHS, the picture looks really positive. It’s a very diverse organisation. However, when you layer on the analysis of who reaches leadership positions it becomes really clear there’s a problem. 🔎 Lyncia Downer shared some really compelling insights about the importance of using the wealth of data gathered, not just continuing to collect it. The importance of taking a rigorous, intersectional approach to data to understand the particular challenges faced by specific groups. And where possible, supplementing quantitative data with qualitative data to ensure that the data has soul and is connected to people and their experiences. 🙌 Caroline Chinondo shared the important, and often overlooked, impact of recognising and rewarding the work people are doing in creating inclusive cultures on top of their day jobs. The power of many micro experiences such as a colleague noticing and saying “thank you so much for the work that you’re doing”. Caroline also shared the value of collaborating and sharing what you’re up to! There were so many other brilliant points covered but a few closing ones that stood out for me: All the data and evidence points to a compelling truth: ⭐ People (from the global majority) don’t need developing, systems and structures need to change ⭐ Leadership inclusive goals need to be measurable and with specific timelines, just like any other KPI ⭐ Getting people to engage when no one has enough time is all about consistent, persistent community engagement, there are no shortcuts! And a final positive note: it only takes 25% of a population to start changing their behaviours for that to become the norm. So it might not be as impossible as it seems. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with the Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust team, using all of these strategies and more to drive impact and build inclusive, diverse teams that can offer the best possible care to their patients.    #DEI #Belonging #inclusion #culture #NHS

Congratulations Alexa Cardenas on receiving the Special Reach Star of Service! Alexa is currently at Northwest Vista completing her prerequisites in order to apply to nursing schools. She works at CVS pharmacy as a new pharmacy technician. Her hobbies include baking, doing her own nails, and going on long hikes with her dog, Cookie. She also says she can DIY just about anything. Alexa says her favorite thing about Special Reach is, “Learning new things about the kids and adapting to make programs a much better experience for them so they have an even greater time at program! Nobody is afraid to jump in on the much loved dance parties, which is one of my favorite activities whether they were planned or not! It is such a fun and lively atmosphere to be in and I always enjoy every minute of it!" She adds, “I have become more compassionate, understanding, and patient as a person, which is crucial when it comes to social settings as we want them to live as normal lives out in public as much as possible. A sobering reality check from A Place for Mom's 2024 State of Caregiving Report: 79% of us aren't fully prepared when we step into the caregiver role for our aging loved ones. Even more eye-opening? We're spending an average of 22 hours per week caring for seniors – that's essentially a part-time job on top of our regular responsibilities. A few stats that hit home: 72% of caregivers report feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed 43% are part of the "sandwich generation," balancing care for both elderly parents and children 67% say they're not getting enough help from family and friends What strikes me most is that while 47% of caregivers need professional help, only 15% currently receive it.
