Sita (name changed), a young girl from the suburbs of Raichur, Karnataka, always dreamt of a brighter future. But her dreams were often shadowed by a simple yet significant challenge: the lack of basic washroom facilities at her school. While her home had a functional washroom—a rarity in many rural households—it was her school environment that posed a hurdle. Attending school meant facing the discomfort and inconvenience of going without access to safe sanitation. This took a toll on her confidence, her attendance, and her ability to focus in class. The turning point came with Sambhav Foundation’s WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiative. The project brought much-needed washroom facilities to her school campus, creating a safe and dignified space for students like Sita. With this simple yet transformative intervention, Sita’s life took a new direction. Now, Sita no longer worries about stepping out of the premises during school hours or missing classes due to the lack of sanitation. Her attendance improved significantly, and she could finally focus on her studies without distractions. For Sita, the presence of a school washroom wasn’t just about convenience—it was about reclaiming her education and dignity. Sita’s story highlights a harsh reality faced by countless girls in rural India. The absence of proper sanitation often forces them to drop out of school, especially as they grow older. WASH interventions not only improve hygiene and health but also empower girls to pursue uninterrupted education, bridging the gender gap in learning and ensuring their right to a better future. The availability of clean, functional toilets has been a game-changer for these students, allowing them to focus on their education without missing school, owing to unhygienic conditions. Such initiatives can be supported by the business schools and private universities in the region. B school students can volunteer to teach as per a prescribed curriculum in batches based on their own timing and they can also help in crowd funding, csr activities for resource mobilization, and help expand such initiatives to other pockets in the region. On the part of the University or the institution they can help such self funded initiatives with bi-annual funds so that children can be fed, taught, and given the necessary resources. Money is needed at every step. Everyone learns something beyond the books, through this process. More than that, the meaning of life becomes clear.

Here’s a glimpse of our impact this quarter: ✨ Creating Safe Learning Spaces We’ve set up three Children Activity Centers (CACs) and twelve learning centers, which together are welcoming 841 children into structured, engaging environments. From math games to storytelling sessions, the centers provide essential learning tools to build skills in counting, reading, and problem-solving. 🎉 Community Events & Celebrations Events like Independence Day celebrations and the School Chalo Abhiyaan enrollment drive have engaged over 1,200 villagers, inspiring families to prioritize education. This has resulted in a significant increase in school attendance. 📚 Hands-On Learning & Skill Development Children are developing social skills, confidence, and a love for learning through interactive activities like cricket, carom, and number games. Our learning corners encourage curiosity and foster personal growth through storytelling and problem-solving. 👫 Empowering Local Leadership Community leaders play an essential role in guiding children and encouraging families to invest in education. Awareness programs on hygiene, nutrition, and the value of education are helping build a strong, community-wide commitment. 💧 Accessing Government Support & Health Initiatives We facilitate children’s access to mid-day meals in schools and AWCs and support preventive measures against vector-borne diseases, sanitation, and seasonal health concerns. In the bustling city of Bathinda, Punjab, a retired railway engineer is giving underprivileged children the wings to dream. Meet K K Garg, the visionary behind the Goodwill Mobile School, a unique initiative that operates classrooms on trolleys to reach children in remote and marginalised communities. "When I used to travel by train, I used to see many innocent and needy children of poor families who were deprived of education,” Garg told ANI. “I decided that, after retirement, I will work to educate these children.” Founded in 2006, the Goodwill Mobile School is a beacon of hope for children in Bathinda’s slums. These mobile schools, equipped with basic learning materials, provide free education to children who cannot access traditional schools due to financial or logistical constraints. How It Works: > Each trolley school visits different slums and remote areas daily. > The school operates in two shifts, from 2–3 pm and 3–4 pm to accommodate children’s schedules. > Along with education, students are provided refreshments to ensure their holistic development. Their goal is simple: to educate the children who need it the most and give them the tools to build a better life. Over the years, the project has expanded significantly, now operating 14 mobile schools. The community's response has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents, initially hesitant, now witness profound changes in their children. What happens when a community comes together for its children? The transformation of GPS Gambhirpur Upper tells the story. The blocked entrance of GPS Gambhirpur Upper, by a pile of cow dung was, in fact, more than a mere inconvenience for the children — it was a barrier to the path of education. The unsanitary conditions during the monsoon season kept children home. That all changed when Sachin, a Young Leader from Dher Cluster of Rupnagar District, took action. He organised meetings with the School Management Committee and sought the support of community members and parents. Their first success? Clearing the entrance, making the school welcoming once again. But the impact didn’t stop there. There is a new energy in the community directed towards further improvements. In this three-decade-old paper, Mina Swaminathan, an icon of ECCE in India (now no longer with us), lists some ways in which innovative training programs in India (such as the Mobile Crèches program, Vanasthali Rural Development Centre program, and Mahila Samakhya Gujarat program) have sought to address the limitations of traditional training models—limitations that remain relevant today. ⭐ Flexible structure and organisation that shifts away from one central fixed curriculum. - Traditional training models tend to use rigid, centralised curricula, but innovative programmes are adopting more flexible structures. ⭐ Innovative training strategies and pedagogy adapted to varying educational levels and cultural backgrounds. -  Traditional programmes often overlook the social situation and cultural differences of children in poverty. ⭐ Emphasis on practical, field-based experience. -  Traditional programmes rely on “chalk and talk” methods of teaching and focus on theory rather than practice. ⭐ Emphasis on partnership- rather than on hierarchical roles and a more inclusive approach to parents and community. -  In traditional models, supervisors rarely participate in training, even though they may have practical skills and experience to offer. #EarlyChildhoodEducation #TeacherProfessionalDevelopment #ContinuousProfessionalDevelopment #TPD #CPD
