𝟳 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝘂𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗞𝗦 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼... 📌 Thinking about running Kubernetes on Azure? Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) is a powerful tool, but to really get the most out of it, you need to know a few tricks of the trade 👀 1️⃣ 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐢𝐭𝐎𝐩𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 Tired of manual deployments? GitOps is your best friend! By treating your infrastructure as code, you can use tools like ArgoCD and Helm to automate deployments. Helm, in particular, simplifies the management of Kubernetes applications by packaging them as Helm charts, making it easier to deploy, version, and roll back changes. It’s a game-changer! 2️⃣ 𝐊𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐲𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐎𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Kubernetes can be complex, so monitoring is crucial. With AKS, you can easily integrate Azure Monitor or Prometheus to track your clusters’ health and performance. Remember, visibility is key to catching issues early before they become full-blown problems. 3️⃣ 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 No one likes surprises on their cloud bill. Take advantage of AKS’s scaling features to automatically adjust resources based on demand and integrate tools like Azure Cost Management to keep an eye on your usage. 4️⃣ 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 Scaling isn’t just about adding more resources; it’s about doing it efficiently. AKS’s horizontal pod autoscaler lets you scale your applications based on metrics like CPU and memory usage. Just set it and forget it, and your apps will scale up or down as needed, ensuring they perform optimally under any load. 5️⃣ 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐈/𝐂𝐃 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐳𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐎𝐩𝐬 Integrating AKS with Azure DevOps can streamline your CI/CD pipelines. Automate your testing, deployment, and even rollbacks with ease. Plus, you can set up multi-stage pipelines to ensure your code moves smoothly from dev to production. 6️⃣ 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐊𝐒 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐨 Security is non-negotiable. Start with the basics: enable Azure Active Directory (AAD) integration, use Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to limit permissions, and regularly audit your cluster with Azure Policy. Keeping your cluster secure is all about layering protections and staying vigilant. 7️⃣ 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐃𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 Don’t forget about securing your containers themselves. Use tools like Azure Defender for Kubernetes to scan your images for vulnerabilities. Keep your containers updated and only use trusted base images. Even with AKS, remember: Kubernetes is just code for unexpected surprises at 2AM 😅. 𝟱 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘇𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺... 📌 As enterprises adopt the cloud, setting up a well-architected foundation becomes very important. This is where Azure Landing Zones come into play! They provide a blueprint for your cloud environment, and by pairing this with Terraform's infrastructure as code capabilities, you can ensure consistent, repeatable, and automated deployments! Here are some best practices to follow: 1️⃣ 𝑺𝙩𝒂𝙧𝒕 𝒘𝙞𝒕𝙝 𝙖 𝙘𝒍𝙚𝒂𝙧 𝙗𝒍𝙪𝒆𝙥𝒓𝙞𝒏𝙩 𝙩𝒉𝙖𝒕 𝒊𝙣𝒄𝙡𝒖𝙙𝒆𝙨: - Subscription Management: Organise subscriptions for your environments (e.g., Dev, Test, Prod) for organisation and better cost management. - Resource Organisation: Use Resource Groups to group related resources. - Networking/Connectivity: Set up Virtual Networks (VNets) and subnets, ensuring they follow your organisation’s IP addressing strategy. 2️⃣ 𝙄𝒎𝙥𝒍𝙚𝒎𝙚𝒏𝙩 𝙍𝑩𝘼𝑪 𝒂𝙣𝒅 𝑮𝙤𝒗𝙚𝒓𝙣𝒂𝙣𝒄𝙚 𝙋𝒐𝙡𝒊𝙘𝒊𝙚𝒔: Principle of Zero Trust! This means setting up strict permissions so that people only have access to what they really need. By doing this, you can prevent accidental deletions and ensure that everything stays in order! How: - Define roles and assign them to users, groups, and service principals. - Set up Azure policies to enforce governance. For example, no VNet deletion, no VMs of a certain size, tags for organisation and tracking etc. 3️⃣ 𝙈𝒐𝙙𝒖𝙡𝒂𝙧𝒊𝙨𝒆 𝒀𝙤𝒖𝙧 𝙏𝒆𝙧𝒓𝙖𝒇𝙤𝒓𝙢 𝘾𝒐𝙙𝒆: Break down your Terraform configurations into reusable modules. This could include: - Networking Module: Define VNets, subnets, Network Security Groups (NSGs). - Identity Module: Configure RBAC with Azure Active Directory, roles, and policies. - Security Module: Implement security controls like Azure Policy and Azure Security Centre. 4️⃣ 𝑨𝙪𝒕𝙤𝒎𝙖𝒕𝙚 𝙬𝒊𝙩𝒉 𝑪𝙄/𝘾𝑫: Automate the deployment and management of your landing zones by integrating Terraform with CI/CD Pipelines (Azure DevOps, Github Actions): - Version Control: Store Terraform code in a version control system like Git. - Automated Testing: Use tools like Terratest to validate Terraform configurations. - Continuous Deployment: Automate deployments with pipelines that validate, plan, and apply changes. 5️⃣ 𝙈𝒐𝙣𝒊𝙩𝒐𝙧 𝙖𝒏𝙙 𝙈𝒂𝙞𝒏𝙩𝒂𝙞𝒏: Set up monitoring and logging to keep an eye on your Azure environment: - Azure Monitor: Track performance and health of resources. - Log Analytics: Centralise logs for easier troubleshooting and analysis. - Alerts: Configure alerts to notify you of critical issues or policy violations. By combining Azure Landing Zones with Terraform, you can build a scalable, secure, and compliant cloud foundation combined with consistent, repeatable, and automated deployments! #Azure #Terraform #CloudInfrastructure #DevOps #CloudBestPractices #InfrastructureAsCode #IAC #LandingZone #Architecture #Cloud #SolutionsArchitect
