A Sustainable Summer of Music and Reusable Cups 🎶♻️ What a time we had at Lollapalooza this summer! Together, we brought TURN cups to the iconic Grant Park, making a significant impact on sustainability and single-use plastic waste reduction. By partnering with Lollapalooza, we're highlighting that large-scale events can be both unforgettable and eco-conscious. Our reusable cups provided a convenient and sustainable alternative to single-use plastics, reducing waste and promoting a circular economy. Let's continue to celebrate this milestone and support a greener future for music festivals! #turn #sustainability #sustainable #circulareconomy #music #festival

The Power of Partnerships in Driving Sustainability at Music Festivals At the recent OHANA Festival, we witnessed the incredible impact of collaboration between C3 Presents, Live Nation, Rob Machado Foundation, and WALLOP WATER USA LLC. Their joint effort encouraged festival-goers to bring refillable water bottles and provided free, triple-filtered, chilled water at the co-branded WALLOP WATER Monster Bars. The result? Over 24,000 single-use plastic bottles were saved from landfills thanks to consuming 3,226 gallons (12,210 litres) of water. 💧 🔍 Powered by Hydro IQ technology, the initiative remotely tracked water usage across 5 Monster Water Bars, with real-time data helping optimize future event planning. This partnership reduced plastic waste and engaged attendees in meaningful, sustainable actions—a perfect example of how technology and collaboration can create lasting environmental change. What’s next for sustainability at festivals? I've been to a few music festivals in the past 12 months (including Lollapalooza '23!) and I've yet to see one that is actively promoting fossil fuels and single-use plastics. Obviously, some are doing better on sustainability than others, but many are at least giving visibility to their renewable energy and waste reduction efforts. What have you experienced? A survey in Europe found festival bans on single use plastic foodware rose from 54% in '22 to 75% in '23, and almost two thirds (60%) had reusable cups. #sustainabilityopportunity #nosingleuseplastics

Festival season 🎪 is upon us! But festivals are more than just music and fun – they're also an opportunity to embrace sustainability and protect our planet! 🌎 British festivals alone produce around 23,500 tonnes of waste each year 🗑️, with nearly 70% of that waste ending up in landfill! That's a staggering amount, but the good news is that festival organisers and attendees alike are stepping up to make a difference 💪. Take Glastonbury, for example. This iconic festival has introduced over 1,200 compost loos 🚽 across the site, ensuring a water-free process that prevents pollution of surrounding rivers. Plus, after a year, these toilets turn into compost that's reused for agriculture at Worthy Farm 🚜. But it's not just about toilets – it's also about tents 🏕️. Over one-third of festivalgoers admit to leaving behind a tent at a festival, contributing to massive waste. That's where innovative solutions like the 'kartent' come in. These cardboard tents 📦, invented by Dutch designers wout kommer & jan portheine, are 100% recyclable ♻️ and can accommodate two people for a three-day festival. And let's not forget about the importance of refill, reuse, and recycle. Many festivals now offer reusable cups 🥤 for a refundable deposit, reducing single-use plastic waste. Shambala festival in Northamptonshire even offers a recycling incentive, refunding £10 to attendees who bring their recyclable items to on-site recycling exchanges 💷. Festival initiatives like compost toilets, cardboard tents, and refillable cups are so important, as they encourage us all to respect our surroundings and reduce our environmental footprint 👣. A recent A Greener Future report, analysing the sustainability credentials of more than 40 festivals across 11 countries, shows significant areas of improvement, such as bans on single-use plastic serveware increasing from 54 per cent in 2022 to 75 per cent last year, a reduction in average waste per person per day from 0.75 kg to 0.5 kg, and more festivals going fully vegan or vegetarian. From fringe concern to mainstream priority, sustainability is finally under the spotlights at a growing number of global music events. But how realistic is a ‘carbon-neutral’ festival, will greater demand for sustainable events change the dial and how can we all do our bit? Last year, Event Vision:2025 published a detailed briefing – Festival Industry Materials and Waste – that not only provides a comprehensive picture of waste challenges experienced by event organisers but also outlines recommendations that will help event professionals make progress on sustainable waste management. The report (authored by Vision 2025, Julie's Bicycle’s, and Resource Futures) and the briefing (by Julie’s Bicycle and Vision 2025) are elements of a three-phase plan that aims to help organisers shape future waste strategies and best practices. At the time, Julie’s Bicycle’s Richard Phillips, a climate change specialist, told StandOut that the report highlighted a huge disconnect between the expectations of festival managers and waste contractors; especially between what organisers think happens to waste and what actually happens. Furthermore, he urged organisers to think about a materials policy that bans problematic materials like disposable vapes, and then think about waste separation. Now, the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) is urging festival organisers to follow Glastonbury’s lead and introduce an outright ban on all disposable vapes. New figures show blazes linked to batteries used in the vapes are rising. Hence, the BMRA says more needs to be done. What are you doing about waste and disposable vapes on your event sites? Is this an issue that’s on your radar #Eventprofs? https://lnkd.in/eq8UJKf7 #Sustainability #Events
