Moderated by Mewahib Mohamed, our Director of Programme and Business Development, the session brought together leading experts across sectors to discuss the transformative power of collaborative housing solutions. Key highlights from the session: 🏙️ Mia Callenberg, Environmental Specialist from Global Environment Facility (GEF) advocated for empowering cities to take a leadership role in addressing local housing challenges, highlighting the importance of strong, multilateral governance models to align national and local efforts. 🏘️ Julian Baskin, Principal Urban Advisor from Cities Alliance emphasised the potential of community-driven housing solutions, particularly focusing on informal settlements and small-scale local contractors to improve the quality and sustainability of housing. 🌱 Cathy Lynch, Senior Urban Specialist from The World Bank Focused on making green housing accessible, arguing that framing green features as cost-saving benefits, rather than added expenses, can drive demand and promote energy-efficient housing. 🤝 Dr. Folayinka Dania, Chief Resilience Officer from Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO), stressed the need for collaboration across sectors, highlighting that no single institution can solve the housing crisis alone. Last month, I had the privilege of sharing insights with students at Africa Leadership University, on innovative solutions to address Africa's pressing housing crisis. Drawing on my doctoral research and industry experience, I emphasized the need for a systemic approach that considers the interconnectedness of various factors. We delved into the complexities of this challenge, recognizing that it extends far beyond the physical construction of buildings. With a staggering $1.4 trillion investment opportunity, we explored how interconnectedness, feedback loops, and systemic thinking can provide a comprehensive approach to tackling this issue. A critical aspect of the discussion was funding – access to mortgage. While finance is often cited as a major barrier, we emphasized the importance of reliable funding sources and risk mitigation strategies to attract private investment and unlock this oportunity. By reimagining housing as a service (HaaS), we can create innovative models that provide access to homeownership and affordable rental options for a wider range of people. Leveraging technology is crucial to expanding access to housing and financial services. Digital platforms can streamline processes, reduce costs, and connect underserved communities with opportunities. 📣 “The CEB’s holistic approach to housing brings sustainable solutions with an additional positive impact on the beneficiaries in terms of health, household finances, employment, education.,” said Vice-Governor Johannes M. Boehmer during the European Association of Public Banks (EAPB) round table event on Shaping the Future of Affordable and Sustainable Housing in Europe last week in Brussels.   👉 The Vice-Governor also emphasised the spill-over benefits of the CEB’s investments in affordable housing, which may include additional investments or revitalization initiatives in the surrounding neighbourhoods and wider economic and social effects.   🏘️ Given its social mandate, the CEB’s work includes a focus on housing for vulnerable groups as well as affordable housing for crucial social service personnel in high cost markets to help address the investment gap. Shelter Afrique Development Bank Applauds Formation of African Housing Ministers’ Financial Caucus Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB) has expressed strong support for the establishment of a Financial Caucus of African Ministers of Housing and Urban Development. This caucus is aimed at addressing shared challenges and opportunities within the housing sector across member states of Africa. By fostering collaboration among ministers, the caucus seeks to devise cohesive strategies that will drive collective action and promote sustainable development in housing and urban development. The initiative underscores the importance of coordinated efforts to tackle pressing issues such as affordable housing, urbanization challenges, and infrastructure development across the continent. Shelter Afrique Development Bank, a key player in financing housing and urban infrastructure projects in Africa, views the caucus as a pivotal step towards enhancing policy coherence and mobilizing resources effectively. This collaborative approach is expected to leverage expertise, resources, and innovative solutions to accelerate progress towards meeting Africa's growing housing needs and fostering inclusive urban development. https://lnkd.in/d7jUNdQx

The issue of housing needs amongst newcomers requires targeted measures and policy changes. If we are to increasingly rely on international migration to address labour market shortages and if all net gain in our population growth will be dependent on immigrants and refugees then it is imperative that we have focused discussions and strategies. Newcomers didn’t create the housing crisis we see today; it was a failure of political leadership and a lack of housing investments decades ago.

Streamlining planning, financing, implementation and monitoring is indeed the way to go.

£80,000 funding launched in Round 3 of scheme to boost rural businesses and organisations    Rural businesses and organisations are being invited to apply for grants to help them boost productivity, improve community buildings, improve accessibility to tourist attractions and green open spaces that support our local communities and businesses.    The scheme aimed at boosting the rural economy launches Round 3 of funding on Monday 8th July 2024 with around £80,000 of capital only funding available. Applications will be treated on a first come first served basis until all funding has been allocated.      The scheme, made possible thanks to £400,000 from Rural England Prosperity Fund in 2023 has been extremely popular and has already seen a wide range of businesses and organisations funded to make business performance improvements, purchase new machinery and vehicles and install energy efficiency measures.     There are a range of grants available, with funds from £7,500 to £22,500. Reasons for Optimism: - Government Initiatives: Policies and programs aimed at addressing the housing crisis - Innovative Solutions: New technologies and building materials offering cost-effective and sustainable options - Private Sector Investment: Capital influx driving development and innovation - Demographic Dividend: Africa's youthful population driving demand for housing and economic growth Ways Forward: - Collaboration and Partnerships: Government, private sector, and civil society working together - Affordable Housing Options: Solutions catering to low- and middle-income families - Sustainable and Innovative Building Practices: Eco-friendly materials, renewable energy, and innovative techniques - Capacity Building and Training: Upskilling professionals for sustainable development Conclusion: Africa's housing deficit is a challenge, but also an opportunity for growth and innovation.
