Dawn Zoldi and DroneLife.com did an incredible job summarizing the Digital Weather Services panel at the DRONERESPONDERS conference. Click the link below to learn more! The key points: - Micro-weather conditions pose challenges for DFR operations, especially as they transition to flying beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS). - The intelligent placement of affordable and weather sensors can empower BVLOS flight. The ASTM weather standard allows for these supplementary systems to be used. - A "system of systems" approach incorporating weather sensors and accurate localized data optimizes flight time, boosts planning, and improves operational safety for DFR missions. https://lnkd.in/eabRmabH

Check our recent publication titled "A Review of Tailings Dam Safety Monitoring Guidelines and Systems " in Minerals, MDPI.📚🎉Written by Masoud Zare, Ph.D., P.E., Florida Nasategay, Jose A. Gomez, Arsham Moayedi Far and Javad Sattarvand. We recently conducted an extensive review of major guidelines on tailings storage facility (TSF) monitoring and surveillance to address the rising concern for tailings dam safety. Recognizing that the failure rate of tailings dams is significantly higher (1.2%) compared to traditional water dams (0.01%), our study emphasizes the need for robust surveillance programs. We explored visual monitoring parameters and best practices for developing effective monitoring systems. Our review highlights the latest advancements in monitoring technologies, including sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and satellite imagery, which can serve as supplementary safeguards against potential dam failures. Could this be an answer to achieving persistent ISR? A common problem for planners is when and how do we assign ISR assets to observe areas of interest. Fuel, maintenance and manning limitations all inhibit the operation of unmanned systems in the battlespace. Leveraging existing power infrastructure to rapidly recharge ISR assets in location would offer enormous flexibility to operators and planners. Obviously this system requires some level of existing infrastructure and compatibility with varying technical standards. If resolved however, the ability to rotate multiple cost efficient assets without having to return them to the operator could be a gamechanger.
