Today, representing the International Department of Fundação AMI, I had the honor of participating in the IV National Meeting of the Higher Education Volunteering Network, held this year under the theme “Volunteering and Globalization” at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa - Porto. I took part in the panel “Volunteering Without Borders: Contributions and Opportunities”, where I presented AMI’s role in the field of international volunteering, highlighting the opportunities and challenges involved. Drawing from my professional experience in the field, I shared reflections on key topics such as: - The social responsibility of volunteer work on the ground; - Managing expectations; - The importance of cooperation with local knowledge; - And the need for intercultural adaptation to foster a sense of global belonging. 🌍🌎🌏 I also explored how international volunteering can transform the way we see the world, even after returning to our home country. International volunteering is undoubtedly a unique opportunity for professional growth, but above all, for personal development. To ensure this, it is essential that volunteering is structured with adequate training, well-managed expectations, and that it is rooted in inclusive and non-paternalistic practices, always anchored in a concrete mission that adds value to the existing knowledge on the ground. I believe that volunteering, when well-oriented, can be a key driver for a more globalized, tolerant, and cohesive society. It has the power to transform not only the communities served but also the volunteers themselves, fostering a more empathetic and connected world.

✨ Looking for a trip that matters? Volunteering might be your best adventure yet! ✨ Why settle for the usual when you can have an adventure that’s a win-win for everyone? Volunteering abroad not only costs you nothing, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to make a real impact and connect with amazing people from around the world! 🌍 This July, I had the fantastic experience of volunteering in Latvia, creating a teenagers camp and organizing a festival with a group of 10 volunteers from Latvia, Poland, Georgia, Spain, Italy, Germany, Macedonia, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Ukraine. Here’s a glimpse of what we achieved: 🚀 Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: We designed and implemented the entire camp program from scratch, including workshops, lectures, and games. It was inspiring to see how our diverse backgrounds and ideas came together to create something meaningful. 💸 Education and Fun Combined: I delivered financial literacy lectures to teens, organized concerts and social events like party and board games, and facilitated a large festival for over 150 people. These events included art therapies, quizzes, concerts, yoga sessions, sports tournaments, and much more. 🌐 Multilingual Magic: As one of the few who spoke both English and Russian, I helped bridge the communication gap between the children and volunteers, ensuring everyone felt included and understood. 🔥 Hands-on Help: From setting up campfires to assisting in the kitchen and managing logistics, we all pitched in to keep things running smoothly. 🤝 Cultural Exchange: Connecting with volunteers from different countries enriched my understanding of various cultures, languages, and traditions. The friendships and memories we made are priceless! Volunteering isn’t just about giving back – it’s about learning, growing, and making unforgettable memories. So next time you’re planning a trip, consider volunteering! It’s an experience that’s truly rewarding, both for you and the communities you serve. 🌟 This post is part of a visibility campaign to raise awareness among young people about the opportunities available through European Solidarity Corps (ESC) and Erasmus+ projects.

Volunteering has helped me to integrate into Australian culture, expand my knowledge and feel I belong here. I have been participating in different volunteer programs to support, learn and contribute to the community over the last 5 years. To celebrate National Volunteer Week, I’ll be sharing some of the lessons I learned from 400 hours of volunteering as a city ambassador at the City of Melbourne. 💡 Expanded Local Knowledge Each volunteer shift brought new opportunities to work with different volunteers and spark different conversations. This allowed me to get to know more about Melbourne from the locals and fellow volunteers. 🙌 Embracing diversity One of the most enriching aspects of volunteering as a city ambassador has been celebrating the diversity of cultures of people who visit our city. Each encounter provided an opportunity to learn about different perspectives, fostering a deeper appreciation for the world’s rich tapestry of cultures. 😀 Simple smile goes along the way To greet someone with a smile is the simple act of kindness we all can express. 🎤 Enhancing Communication Skills Being on the street or at different events, I have communicated with people from different walks of life. This helped me to become a better communicator. ☘ Commitment is not easy, but the rewards are greater When I learned that the minimum commitment for the volunteer role was 12 months, I was a bit hesitant. However, by taking each week as it goes, and showing up for each shift, I learned the value of commitment. With commitment, the depth of relationship with other volunteers went deeper along with a greater volume of knowledge and experience gained. If you are volunteering somewhere like me, let me know what have you learned from your experience. #volunteer #NVW2024 #somethingforeveryone #volunteerexperience
