I often get asked, "how do you feel about shifting tracks completely from the business world to acting?" First of all, that's not entirely true because I haven't shifted tracks "fully" but that's a matter of discussion for another post. Secondly, while the world of acting has a lot to do with being creative, a great part of it also has to do with the business of acting. In fact, it has made me embrace and apply more business strategies than ever. For instance, let's talk about the question I get the most - how do you get these auditions? As a freelance actor, I've found that treating audition opportunities as leads and applying business development strategies has been crucial in my journey. So here's how I approach it. In my head, I've created a deck which I call "Business Development Strategies for Actors: Maximizing Audition Opportunities" and its essence is in the following "three-pronged approach": 1) Passive Lead Generation - "Wait & Watch": Similar to inbound leads in business, I maintain an active online presence on Instagram (which is the LinkedIn for the field) + keep my profile in circulation with the casting directors (CDs). By showcasing my work and credentials, I create opportunities for directors to reach out to me directly with role requirements that align with my profile. 2) Active Lead Generation - "Go for the Hunt": In addition to passive strategies, I proactively search for audition opportunities on Instagram or WhatsApp status updates of CDs. By leveraging hashtags, following relevant accounts, and staying tuned to industry updates, I identify casting calls that match my skills and interests. This active approach allows me to seize opportunities that might otherwise pass me by. 3) Community Collaboration - "Networking for Leads": Collaboration within the acting community plays a vital role in my audition strategy. Every morning, I start my work day by engaging in information exchange with fellow actors, sharing insights about ongoing casting work and industry trends. Through this network, I not only gain valuable leads but also contribute to the success of my peers by sharing relevant opportunities and contacts. By combining passive and active lead generation tactics with community collaboration, I cast a wider net and increase my chances of landing exciting roles in the competitive world of acting. I end up getting about 2-3 auditions a day which is not a bad average at all by any means. Conversions are a different story altogether. #Acting #Auditions #LeadGeneration #BusinessDevelopment #Networking #Community #Collaboration (P.S.: I significantly leveraged ChatGPT to write this - mostly the business speak :))

It always feels so weird to start off these posts, because almost everyone on the platform knows that it's going to read as a #sales type of post, but what am I to do? Everyone is doing it. 😅 C'mon, let's not be silly about this. You work on projects that require #voice talent, and you already know the whole rigmarole from talent who can turn it around fast, do it for low cost, and make it sound like it came from a hundred thousand dollar studio, right? There aren't many selling points when it comes to #voiceactors and trying to offer a unique value to their service, but if #testimonials from past clients could say anything about how the process was to work with me, I'm more than certain that you'd find your experience to be fantastic. Take it from Max Watson from the City of Rock Hill, SC... “C.J. is exactly what you should expect in a voice artist and much more. From his exceptional customer service and attention to detail to his lightning fast completion and follow up, C.J. really delivers ... not to mention, a great voice! I’m very thankful to have C.J.’s talents as a part of our productions.” Let's work together on your next big #video, #eLearning, #explainer, or #corporate project, and you'll be as happy as Max was. 😄 #videoproduction #instructionaldesign #marketingagency #brandvideo #elearningdeveloper #creativedirector #advertisingagency ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🎙 Looking for a trusting voiceover artist to Elevate Your Brand and Leave an Impression? 🎙 Feel free to send over a DM or check out my featured work on my profile.

Videos Improve Audience Retention Another characteristic of most search engine algorithms is that they consider audience retention. These algorithms associate the quality of content with how long your visitors stay on your page. Despite increased incoming traffic, their sudden departure is clear that they didn't get what they were after. You can improve audience retention by contextualizing your content using videos. There is a high probability that people will stay longer when they watch a video on it. Additionally, there's a higher probability that they will watch the video instead of reading the entire post. Let's chat about the world of storytelling and voiceover talent. Picture this: You're sitting around a campfire at night, shadows dancing as a storyteller spins a tale that totally grabs you. That's the magic of storytelling, and these days, authentic storytellers and voiceover artists are keeping that tradition alive in our digital world. So, what makes a storyteller authentic? Well, they don't just read words - they bring them to life! Every little pause and change in tone is there to make you feel like you're right in the middle of the story. It's all about making that connection. Now, let's talk about voiceover artists. These guys have got some serious talent! Their voices can be totally captivating. Whether it's for radio, TV, or online, a good voice can really make things pop. The real magic happens when great storytelling meets an awesome voice. That's when you get completely sucked into whatever you're listening to, whether it's a thrilling story or just some info about a new gadget. Of course, it's not all easy-peasy. Voice actors have to keep their voices in top shape, nail different tones, emotions, and keep listeners hooked - even during the boring bits. But when they get it right, it's powerful stuff. A great voice can make you feel all sorts of emotions and leave a lasting impression. So there you have it. Storytelling and voiceover work are very important in how we share stories and information these days. If you're into this kind of thing, you might want to check out www.stevegouwsvo.com. I'm someone that can speak right to your heart and mind with my authentic storytelling.

Beyond the voice. What you get from me beside me speaking out loud... 1️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 Checking your script is grammatically correct and fits the allotted time. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿 Ensuring your script flows naturally and communicates succinctly. 3️⃣ 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 Ensuring the tone of voice creates the right relationship with your audience. 4️⃣ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 Giving your message a rounded characterisation so that it feels like HUMAN communication. 5️⃣ 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 Want to ensure the voice will fit with the music and footage you might be using on the fly? No voice exists in isolation, so I take that as part of my responsibility when necessary. Yes - most of these details 𝘚𝘏𝘖𝘜𝘓𝘋 be covered by other members of a creative team. But 𝘚𝘏𝘖𝘜𝘓𝘋 doesn't always happen. So it's best to be prepared. When you hire a voice actor, you want someone who has a vested interest in making the recording as good as possible, not just a clock watcher. That doesn't mean I'll vomit feedback at you that you never asked for. But if I see a potential hiccup, I'll highlight it and get it addressed. Not just wait for my bit to be over. Yesterday, I received an email from someone who follows me on Tik Tok and she was asking how to get into voiceovers and what advice I could give her. I wrote a blog on precisely that, which is full of information on how to get started, plus some real world stuff that anyone wanting to make the leap should know. https://lnkd.in/eq5Bm7Xx If you were to believe everything you read from voiceover artists on here and across social media, then you would think that they are back to back, flat out with sessions all day every day. They're #blessed and #grateful for their wonderful clients, posting reviews of their work. But I thought it would only be the right thing to do to give her the truth. After linking her to my blog, I added that I really would re consider. The industry has changed significantly over the last few years. Jobs are scarce, rates are being hammered down by newbies that don't understand session fees and usages and companies that won't give us the full picture in terms of usage, making it near impossible to quote. During lockdown, tonnes of people entered the industry thinking that it will be an easy way to make money; after all, all you have to do is buy a cheap mic, an audio interface and BOOM, you're a vo!! There are training companies and 'coaches' asking, "have you got a nice voice? Well you could be a voiceover!!" It’s completely saturated and the quality of voiceovers you hear on tv and radio can be shocking. Let's not forget the elephant in the room. AI is getting better every single day and even though we may not like it, some AI voices are really quite good. For a dry corporate read, or explainer video, I have to day that it does just fine. Call up HMRC and you'll be greeted with a nasty robot voice. Even a national organisation doesn't want to pay for a human! Companies are using AI more and more. You know what's truly upsetting? Some of my most talented voiceover friends are really and I mean really struggling. I have friends that have had incredible careers, voicing national tv commercials, doing multiple radio and corporate sessions every day and now they are barely working, struggling to pay bills and mortgages and are looking at other means of working. By the way, it's exactly the same for people in advertising, marketing and producers. They're struggling too. The harsh reality is that I wouldn’t be entering an industry that is really struggling at the moment. Hopefully with a new government and an upturn in spending it will pick up, but don't be seduced by bragging social media posts or coaches saying how easy it is, because it's bloody hard. It takes training, diligence, hard work, a really good ear, perseverance and time. People don't want to discuss the reality of the situation, because they're too afraid to let their network know how it actually is. They would rather show a false reality of being #busy and #blessed. But I think it's important to have an honest, transparent and open dialogue.
