E-mobility as a grid mitigation to start a new area with V2G
The widespread introduction of #electricmobility and its technical solution, Vehicle-to-Grid (#V2G), offers the opportunity to store #renewableenergies from wind, water, and solar power in electric vehicles (#EVs) and support grid stability in Europe through digitization. Simultaneously, sustainability of vehicles can be increased by approximately 96% through second-life use of batteries after around 15 years of service.
However, what barriers still exist for the comprehensive implementation of Smart Charging and Vehicle-to-Grid technology (V2G), especially in Germany, and what potential solutions can be considered? International experts recently convened in Düsseldorf to discuss this and I had the pleasure to be among them as NTT DATA member. Within the framework of the EU SCALE project ‘New Horizon,’ survey results from December 2023 were presented, where stakeholders from business, politics, and academia were asked about the obstacles to V2G adoption in the European context. The PwC premises provided the setting for a hybrid workshop to deliberate the following findings and policy action areas:
- Double Taxation: Some EU countries face double taxation due to inadequate definitions of energy storage as a business activity, hindering compensation for energy generation and storage by prosumers.
Market Participant Gaming: Arbitrage activities between regions could be addressed through roaming agreements, similar to those used in mobile networks.
Focus on Global Standardized Communication Protocols: Implementing protocols like ISO #15118-20 is crucial for seamless data exchange between Distribution System Operators (#DSOs) and Charge Point Operators (#CPOs), a prerequisite for a successful energy and mobility transition.
In Germany, the widespread rollout of #smartmeters is primarily hindered by the insufficient support from the German Federal Government. Urgently needed legal frameworks are slated for analysis until 2030. Meanwhile, in #Spain and #Sweden, nearly 100% of households already have available smart meters, laying the groundwork for intelligent utilization of renewably sourced energy over many years. We can only hope that the electric vehicles (EVs) set to debut this summer from automakers like Renault and Polestar will further drive progress, enabling Germany to accelerate its energy and mobility transition. Our first V2G pilot project in Germany, as part of the EU SCALE initiative, is about to commence, aiming to practically verify the necessary technical prerequisites.
