NYC is undisputedly the best place to build in healthcare AI 🏥 , sitting at the intersection of exploding tech/AI momentum + matured healthcare/life sciences economy, with all-time-high venture + gov funding + R&D scientists Had a ton of fun hosting an intimate healthcare-centric dinner tonight with researchers, engineers, founders, health system operators, and physicians from Tandem, Tennr, Mount Sinai Health System, Google DeepMind, Counsel Health, EliseAI, Neo, Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences, Inductive Bio, NYC Health + Hospitals with John Bryson (Banc of California) Lots of excitement all around, coupled with some frustration with the deeply brokenness of U.S. healthcare - some of the hot takes / promising areas we talked about: - If your healthcare AI startup’s product is on Epic’s roadmap, you have no chance of winning, as health systems would much rather adopt an okay solution from Epic ⏳ - AI scribing tools have not meaningfully evolved since v1 📑 - Healthcare will get much worse before it gets better - the U.S. society is totally unprepared for the silver tsunami / rapidly aging population 👵 (Visible Ventures portco Grayce is tackling this problem!) - Better retrieval of medical records with precision on what part of a patient’s records is relevant to diagnostics will unlock huge time savings for doctors (and correct their human errors) 🔬 - Improving scientific reasoning abilities of frontier models will lead to better reasoning in diagnostic workflows, which is currently under-explored due to difficulty of finding high-quality benchmarks 🧠 - Startup founders can’t build a durable, venture-scale company on the sole basis of prior auth 🛣 - Machine learning models are speeding up DFT calculations significantly, enabling improved analysis and understanding of biomarker systems 👩🔬 - We will live in a future where pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) is obsolete 💊
Love to see this! We should collab on a future healthcare event! My teammate Jacqueline Deprey is working on expanding our healthcare network in nyc too alongside Adarsh Bhatt
Thanks for sharing the highlights. Great group of folks!
I'd like to see more women at the table. 50:50
Thanks for sharing this discussion! NYC seems indeed to be a powerhouse for healthcare AI, and the challenges raised resonate deeply. • Epic’s dominance highlights the urgent need for interoperable AI tools that genuinely improve care while reducing friction for health systems. • AI scribing needs more than tweaks—it demands a shift to truly relieve clinician burnout and enhance care quality - also I think there is now technology which can cover that as we use it. • Tackling the ‘silver tsunami’ is critical; multidisciplinary, tech-enabled care for aging populations is a must, as I’ve seen with innovative solutions like medical cannabis for chronic care. - for this Medsym is great tool launched few months ago ago • Precision retrieval of medical records would be a game-changer for clinician decision-making and patient outcomes. • Improving diagnostic AI reasoning is key—leveraging real-world data can bridge the gap for usable, practical solutions. Key is to plug it right way so doctors can validate it and teach AI where inaccurate
Thank you so much for shouting out Grayce - our mission is so important! 💜
A good thing to remember that we have been joking about for 10+ years now: “everything is on Epic’s roadmap” 😂
Nice event, wish I could have made it. Curious who said the piece on PBMs and why? Would love to unpack and learn more
Please consider including SoMeDocs(Doctors on Social Media) so we can not only be a part of this conversation, but also cover the event in our widely-read magazine and newsletter. Doctorsonsocialmedia.com/magazine
Record retrieval point is interesting, what are the actual issues you’re seeing there? This seem like this day and age that should be solved time and time over. But I guess that’s healthcare tech
