Unlike others who packed ads with product specs, Bernbach believed advertising was an art and pushed for uniqueness over uniformity. 🤝 Bernbach's approach was way ahead of his time. He paired copywriters with art directors, creating dynamic duos that breathed life into ads. This collaboration ensured that the visuals and words danced together perfectly, making ads not just seen but felt. 🦄 He was a pioneer of diversity in the workplace, hiring based on talent and kindness, not background. When they founded DDB, Bernbach hired Phyllis K. Robinson, whom he had worked with in the past, as the first-ever woman chief copywriter. Simplicity was Bernbach's secret weapon. Humour in Advertising - The hardest concepts to ever get approved! In our 21 years+ in the production game, I’ve genuinely lost count of the amount of comedic creatives we’ve pitched, seen the client get really excited about and essentially see the plug get pulled when someone higher up the chain gets ‘cold feet’ and we have to revert to a very safe approach. Humour is an invaluable tool in advertising, offering numerous benefits that enhance a brand's appeal and effectiveness. One of the primary advantages is its ability to capture and retain attention. In a media landscape saturated with advertisements, a humorous ad stands out, making viewers more likely to engage with the content rather than skip or ignore it! Moreover, humour can be a unifying force, breaking down barriers and creating a sense of community among diverse audiences. It can address sensitive topics in a light-hearted manner, making them more approachable and less contentious. This can be particularly effective in fostering inclusivity and appealing to a broad demographic. It begs the question, why the fear!? I imagine most of the adverts you remember from your childhood are the funny ones, so don’t fear it but embrace it. Is this a shift away from 15 sec ads or can the Princess of Wales produce anything as it will always get seen? Whatever your thoughts, cynical or otherwise, on Kate Middleton's decision to release a short film to communicate her recovery, one thing is clear, the family chose a very cinematic personal ad style to get the message across. No influencer style chat to phone camera, no use of fast motion graphics AND IMP it was 3+ minutes! Perfume ad tropes of 70s washed out colour, on trend film strip transitions, mix media styles and a poetic personal VO. We know there has been a huge shift of video brand advertising ads going internally within stretched marketing teams. I personally think has led to a reduction in creativity, technical prowess and story led engagement in favour or fast turnover and content content content.
