⭐ Don't miss this Research Call from CSP at the University of Zurich! ⭐ Emilio Marti (Erasmus University Rotterdam), in a joint research project with Tanja Ohlson (University of New South Wales) and Falko Paetzold (University of Zurich), shadowed the Federated Hermes SDG engagement fund for 2.5 years to understand when shareholder engagement works and when not. During this one hour call, Emilio will share about their research insights, drawn from numerous meeting observations with companies and over 115 interviews with engagement specialists. I remember being a young boy (yes, correct, that is now a little while ago!) and being introduced to the mythical creature of the Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie, during a family holiday to Scotland. Little did i think that it would emerge once again when i virtually attended the 10th Annual Conference of the Principles hosted by the ICMA - International Capital Market Association in Amsterdam earlier this week. It was great to gain an insight into the experiences and views of so many distinguished practitioners within #debtcapitalmarkets around #sustainability, including the trends in asset allocation towards sustainable investments, updates to the sustainable product suite and accompanying guidance, and consideration of the role different standards might play on market practice. There is a lot which chimes with our experience at TISE - The International Stock Exchange and our sustainable finance segment, TISE Sustainable, where we have issuers/securities utilising the ICMA frameworks. You'll have to read the article - see below - to find out who was talking about the Loch Ness Monster and why Nessie is relevant to #sustainable #bond markets!
READ this article by Mark Oliphant, Head of Marketing & Communications, who joins ICMA - International Capital Market Association in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Green Bond Principles and finds the Loch Ness Monster lurking among the discussions at Annual Conference of the Principles in Amsterdam. FAIRR was delighted to be part of the CII 2024 Spring Conference held in Washington DC. 💡 Sofía De La Parra, Investor Outreach Manager at FAIRR, was on a panel discussion hosted by FAIRR's investor member Newton Investment Management Group. She was joined by JP Gibbons, Senior Director in the Sustainable and Impact Investing Group at Cambridge Associates, Julianne DiCenso McHugh, Head of Sustainable Equities and Senior Portfolio Manager at Newton Investment Management Group, and Rebecca White, CFA, Global ESG Integration Lead at Newton Investment Management Group to explore the challenges in incorporating #nature considerations into investment decisions, the financial relevance of nature to #investments, and strategies for utilising research and engagements with companies to understand and support #risk and opportunity management. Some key takeaway points include: 🔹 IPBES identifies the #agriculture sector as the main driver of #biodiversity loss. 🔹 Regulations like Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and EU nature restoration law are driving companies and investors towards nature-focused actions. 🔹 Nature is crucial for investors because changes to it pose both systemic and idiosyncratic risks. For example, 55% of GDP depends on nature, and our economy relies on ecosystem services such as clean air and #water.

Join Will Martindale (Canbury) and I for part 2, as we dive into advocating for more sustainable capital markets! How are people are trying to shift the normative interpretation of what we mean by responsible and sustainable, rather than argue in favour of concessionary investing, which brings up the question of 'who decides how much concession, on which issues' ? We go into the; - 5 characteristics of a Responsible Investment - weaponisation of ESG - recognition of market failures, and what to do about them - societal loss that accompanies politicians rising to the top who have thick skins and deep wallets - links between high conviction, sustainable or impact investments, the portfolios invested in, and their relation to the real economy - massive disconnect between responsible investors and who's deciding the rules of the game, and what to do about it. NB: "It's easier to imagine the end of the world, than it is to imagine the end of capitalism" can be attributed to Fredric Jameson and Slavoj Žižek If you haven't got Will's latest book Responsible Investment, an Insider's Account of What's Working, What's Not and Where Next - what are you waiting for?! :) It features a host of fascinating perspectives from Alex Edmans, Robert Eccles, Catherine Howarth OBE, Claudia Chapman, Jon Lukomnik, Martin Špolc, Nathan Fabian, Philippe Zaouati, Roger Urwin & Stephanie Pfeifer OBE.
