Yes, this is a significant victory for Veterans in Los Angeles; however, it is a disservice to the employees who work on the West Los Angeles campus. You ask why because that facility is severely understaffed, especially in public safety. The hiring of VA police officers is lagging, and it may be possible because of the pay scale. West Los Angeles is a monster of a facility and is the closest thing to working in a municipal department. We're taking calls from petty thefts up to attempted murders. The West LA VA Medical Center is a small city. Why is it that VA Medical Centers such as the Phoenix VA are comparable in salary to West Los Angeles or Palo Alto VA with a significant increase in their pay but do not experience the same activity? Other services at West LA are hurting for people: Nurses, Doctors, etc. Overall, I believe public safety is the most important thing to look into when increasing the population on that campus.
