Pizza Expo is almost here, and I cannot wait for it to open! Last year was my first year to attend; I learned so much and made many new friends, including Warren Mitchell Katz 🧀; Fabrizio Iocco now at Pizza Group USA; Omer C. from Truffle (great product, looking forward to adding it my brick & mortar locations); and of course 🍕 Michael V. of Picnic. This year should be even more interesting, especially with the new Hot Rocks Pizza Ovens Volcano conveyor oven unveiling! I have the Dragon oven now, repped by Devon Zielinski at USA Equipment Direct (review coming soon). I like it, we’re baking pizza now with it. My main pizza chefs are very happy with it. But, Max Jacques at Hot Rocks is teasing a new AI camera built into the Volcano oven that could rewrite quality control and turn pizza making into gamification by operators. What more could the camera do to extend its use? Track realtime cost of pizzas? Count pepperonis? Root out waste while keeping things fun? Tie into 3PL platforms and provide photographic proof for Voosh dispute management? So many possibilities. I had more questions then they had answers for, so I’m looking forward to talking to the dev guys there. The Volcano isn’t shipping until October, but if what they are saying pans out, it will step up the pizza game and pull another piece of the automated pizza making journey together. Snacks at cinemas burning a hole in your pocket? Here's the result of this experience. So, last year, PVR Inox raked in some serious cash just by selling snacks like popcorn and Pepsi at their movie theaters. Sometimes they cost more than the actual movie ticket! And get this, there's data to back it up. According to a new report, PVR Inox made a ton of money solely from their food and beverage business in the fiscal year 2023-2024. But here's the kicker: PVR Inox isn't just about movies anymore. Nope, they're looking to switch gears and become a big player in the F&B scene too. And you know what? It's working like a charm. Their F&B revenue keeps climbing, thanks to introducing new goodies, especially stuff like unlimited Pepsi and popcorn. It's driving up their average spend per customer, or what they call SPH. Their CFO, Nitin Sood, weighed in on the whole situation, saying that while box office sales have been a bit up and down, the growth in F&B revenue has been nothing short of impressive. It's been outpacing the growth rate of ticket sales! And according to him, F&B is set to outperform ticket revenue in coming years. Looks like PVR Inox is onto something big here. I have been getting more involved in studying crowd management and crowd science, but let’s talk about crowd engineering. Take concessions for example. How do you maximize efficiency of sales? People need to know where certain concessions are located. This helps prevent that chaotic circulation within a crowd when patrons are looking for their favorite venue food choice. You need to have straight lines and not a bunch of crowd circulation in front of the concessions. At food stands the menus should be simple and not elaborate. This will prevent patrons from taking too much time deciding what they want. You can shave off several seconds which can effectively double the sales at a concession stand. Take a bottoms up beer dispenser. Servers can serve more items in less time which can also increase sales. More food for thought. #salesrevenue #venuemanagement #eventservices

As you crack open the beers and kick off the game, each person picks their spot in the supply chain: you might be making the beer as the manufacturer, sending it out as the distributor, getting it to the shops as the wholesaler, or selling it direct to the customers as the retailer. Once you start playing, you'll see how crazy it gets trying to keep up when you don’t know what the others are up to. Every round, something new pops up and throws everyone off. It's just like dealing with real-life mess-ups, where a small mix-up somewhere can send waves down the whole line. Knocking back a few while you play makes it chill, but it also kind of shows what it's like trying to make smart moves when you're not 100% on your game. It turns into a fun but really eye-opening look at how every choice you make can stir up something big, and before you know it, you're all learning more about supply chains than you figured, laughing over who messed up last round, and getting why this stuff matters in real jobs. By the time you're done, you’ll all get a real taste of what it's like to manage these crazy systems every day!
