Rethinking what’s next for New York and New Jersey begins with how our teams build collaborative relationships with the communities they serve. Because we live and work across this region, we see first-hand how our projects improve opportunities. Noteworthy projects — from the modernization of New York Penn Station in Manhattan to the restoration of the Lower Passaic River in New Jersey — show how our multidisciplinary capabilities shape our neighborhoods and build sustainable legacies for generations to come. Read more from our New York Metro Executive-in-Charge Thomas Prendergast on how we’ve supported infrastructure in New York and New Jersey for nearly a century — and how each experience builds a pathway for better futures: https://lnkd.in/ew3aSz5t #RethinkWhatsNext #RethinkingNYNJ #ConnectingCommunities #SustainableLegacies

🌾 The Vital Role of Rural Communities in New York State 🌾 It is imperative to recognize the invaluable contributions of our rural communities in such a diverse state as New York. Beyond the bustling streets of the cities, these hidden gems epitomize resilience, innovation, and community spirit. In the fabric of New York State, rural areas weave a tapestry of agricultural richness, cultural diversity, and economic vitality. From the verdant fields of the Hudson Valley to the picturesque landscapes of the Finger Lakes, each corner holds unique treasures and opportunities. Rural communities serve as the backbone of our agricultural sector, driving forward the farm-to-table movement and sustaining generations of proud farmers. Their dedication not only feeds our state but also fuels local economies, fostering job creation and entrepreneurial growth across the state. As we look to the future, let us reaffirm our commitment to supporting and empowering the rural communities of New York State. By investing in agriculture, manufacturing, and education, we can ensure equitable opportunities and prosperity for all who call New York State “home”. Milwaukee is tackling the challenge of urban stormwater management through an innovative community-based public-private partnership. The Fresh Coast Protection Partnership is expanding green infrastructure, enhancing neighborhood quality, and developing the local workforce. In this episode, Bre Plier, AICP from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District and Kurt Farrell of CIS delve into the intricacies of scaling these efforts, benefits of collaboration, and impactful results seen so far, such as capturing millions of gallons of stormwater and revitalizing urban spaces. They also highlight the importance of designing with maintenance in mind, engaging community stakeholders, and fostering small, minority, and women-owned businesses. I was pleased to attend an initial Wavertree High Street Partnership meeting last night. Instigating such a group was a recommendation from the High Street Task Force work by Steve Millington, jim fox and Afroditi Maria Kazakou. The discussion and priorities for the group included boosting the pride people have for the area, making it a safer and more welcoming place, and encouraging more visitors to the high street through events. We also discussed building on the recent blue plaque installation of George Harrison by Historic England, and thinking about how we can enhance the role of the conservation area. We also heard about contact with Joe Barratt from Institute of Place Management about a Teenage Market! The thing that really stood out was the trust in the room. We had the council, councillors, community businesses, and residents. The High Streets Task Force report for the area: "the vast amounts of expertise" within the local community, and we had conservation specialists, planning consultants, and governance experts in the room. All people who live locally and want to help improve where they live. I am not surprised; in communities all over the country we have amazing people who want to make a difference. Join your local civic society to find out! . People in places are such an untapped resource to build capacity. The Wavertree High Street Partnership is an organic approach that is built on 4-5 years of trust that has been created locally by active citizens. So, what has enabled this partnership to develop? It was the work of The Wavertree Society responding to a negative news article and convening a public meeting in 2019, which led to the creation of #LoveWavertreeCIC. This triggered hundreds of activities including events and litter picks, local companies such as Virtuopo offering funding support, an MP who has built relationships with community groups, a new councillor who lives in the area, and more recently, the appointment of a new council officer in a 'place-based role.' Key individuals in positions that need to be working together. No one person or organisation can do it all. The meeting yesterday was the result of a number of years, not because the Government decided some funding was available. We need to create/cultivate the ingredients for a successful partnership, long before the partnership starts. Finally, I am hoping a new Government recognises the power of people in places when considering further devolution and who needs to be in the discussion. We will get better policy outcomes if we do.

Three years ago today we launched "This is #DerelictIreland". Self-funded, and including an extensive first of its kind study of 340 properties in Cork City centre the report shone a light, challenged and discussed what is possible if we end dereliction in Ireland and provide homes and places to play and create and access to just, meaningful work instead. The report kickstarted the #DerelictIreland movement and is still as relevant today.
