Vending machines have existed for a while, and it is very surprising the objects you can get from them nowadays. You can get umbrellas, ties, burgers, and even mashed potato. Although I am not a fan of mashed potato coming from a vending machine, I must admit it is very impressive. I remember the first time I ever saw one. It was this clear plastic sphere full of sugar gummies. Yes, I am talking about a bubble gum machine. I think you have probably ever seen one. If not, I can explain it to you quickly. Basically, you insert a coin in the machine, you rotate a piece of metal, and then, a bubble gum drops (or maybe two, if the machine is generous). In the meantime, the coin drops and it is saved inside the machine. Quite a clever system to be honest, as it is purely mechanical with no energy or person needed in the machine (apart from the excited kid that wanted the gum). Now, this machine was invented in the late 19th century, but vending machines have been existing for a while. Machines that were coin operated have existed as early as the 17th century when there were tobacco vending machines in the taverns of England. Why do these machines exist? Well, the answer is simple: people want to sell products to customers in a more convenient way. Yes, it sounds like a wish of the modern capitalist. I mean, these have become very popular since the modern age, so I think this is not wrong. However, no matter the era, people and business are two words that go hand in hand. The earliest known reference of what we know as a vending machine is from over 2000 years ago. In the first century, the legendary engineer Hero of Alexandria (yes, that was his name) created a vending machine of holy water. The way it worked was that a person inserted a coin into the slot of the machine, the coin depressed a pedal, and then the pedal opened a valve that allowed water to flow out in the right amount. I am not sure what surprises me more. The fact that someone invented such a machine by the time of the Roman Empire, or that it was used to automate the process of holy water distribution. In the end, one thing is clear, great inventions come from unexpected problems. So next time you use a vending machine, remember that someone wanted to make the lives of priests easier two millennials ago. Thank you for reading! 😃 If you want to see how this simple but powerful device works, you can click into the video: https://lnkd.in/eRWYykYR. As always, nobody is paying me for this. I just found it very interesting. Engineering is amazing, right?
