🕋 Understanding Qurbani (Udhiyah) 🕋 Qurbani, also known as Udhiyah, is a profound religious practice in Islam, commemorating the act of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) when he was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) as an act of obedience to Allah. Allah, in His mercy, replaced Ismail with a ram before the sacrifice took place. Qurbani is performed by Muslims worldwide during Eid al-Adha, marking the end of the Hajj pilgrimage. It is a display of faith, obedience, and gratitude to Allah. Key Aspects of Qurbani:   Animal Selection: Common animals used for Qurbani are goats, sheep, cows, and camels. They must meet specific age and health criteria.   Timing: Qurbani is performed from the 10th to the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah.   Intention: The sacrifice should be made with a sincere intention to seek closeness to Allah, following Prophet Ibrahim's example.   Distribution of Meat: The meat is divided into three parts: one for personal or family consumption, one for relatives and friends, and one for the needy and less fortunate. Qurbani symbolizes sacrifice, generosity, and compassion. It reminds Muslims of their blessings and the importance of sharing joy and food with the community, especially those in need. While Qurbani is highly recommended for those who can afford it, it is not obligatory for all Muslims. Ramdhan Kareem… Ramadhan tomorrow 🎉 Here's some simple points for anyone who wants to learn more about it and support their Muslim friends and colleagues who are fasting: 1. Ramadan happens once a year and lasts around 30 days 2. We follow the lunar calendar which is why it starts earlier each year (shifts by around 11 days) 3. It's a month for spiritual discipline and it helps us feel grateful for what we have 4. We fast from sunrise to sunset and yup: "not even water" (around 13 hours of fasting this year in the UK) 5. It's not just about abstaining from food/drink but also about charity and practicing patience and kindness 6. We don't mind being around people eating/drinking so don't feel the need to apologise 7. Our sleeping hours/caffeine intake changes so we might seem tired. We don't expect to get special treatment while fasting but it would be kinder to check our preference for meeting hours 8. Ramadan can be tough for some. Do check on your Muslim friends/colleagues during this month 9. No question is a bad question, we love talking about Ramadan and are happy to answer any questions people have.
