It’s a charge that has been rolled out often enough: artworks so seemingly simple in design that the creative effort involved would apparently not challenge a 5-year-old. At the same time, some of these works are considered to be among the world’s greatest paintings, hanging in important museums, or up for sale in major auction houses with eye-watering price tags. Clearly there is more to it than facile technique, but what, exactly? In our latest blog post we look at the question of complexity in 'simple' works by artists such as Lucio Fontana, Josef Albers, and Jackson Pollock, and considering how we can tackle authenticity issues. You can find it at https://lnkd.in/eBReCDgb.

From "Albion Passages" 2024: William Havlicek's paintings are in the permanent collections of: Smithsonian Czech & Slovak Museum, Cedar Rapids Art Museum, Laura Musser Museum & many private collections. #AlbionPassages2024UK I liken this work and others in this set to be like an essence distilled from multiple views and impressions from nature. An aromatic essence or perfume is made by distilling flowers and herbs into a fragrance made from real things. In this way, a perfume is not abstract (or beyond ones grasp) but in fact it is powerfully tangible and tactile. Paintings like mine are based on the natural world and made out of actual pigments extracted from the earth. My intention is to make works that are "more real" not less.

✨What are Catalogue Raisonnés and why do they matter? What is a Catalogue Raisonné? A Catalogue Raisonné is a comprehensive listing of all known works of art by an artist, either in a specific medium or in any medium. Catalogue Raisonnés contain: ✨physical descriptions of artworks and their condition, ✨a critical assessment of their aesthetic importance ✨the literature they’ve been mentioned in ✨their exhibition history ✨and their provenance: their ownership journey over the years, from creation to the present day And what are they used for? As well as being used for general research, Catalogue Raisonnés are used widely by collectors, curators, academics and art dealers to ascertain the authenticity of artworks. If you’re researching a particular British artist, viewing their Catalogue Raisonné can give broader context to their work. We have created Catalogue Raisonnés for numerous British artists since our foundation in 1970, and we hold many more in our library.
