The American Public Health Association (APHA) sponsors National Public Health Week from April 3 to 9 to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important for improving our nation’s health. This year’s theme, Centering and Celebrating Cultures in Health, emphasizes the way different cultures focus on health. As an FQHC, for My Community Health Center, public health is more than just health care. It is all the steps we take to make sure our neighborhoods and environment are healthy. It is making sure our food and water are safe to eat and drink. It is also the relationships we foster in our communities. We are all interconnected. The results of the 2024 #RILifeIndex are in, and they show that a broad range of Rhode Islanders continue to be highly challenged by affordable housing, food security, and the cost of living. The RI Life Index, a partnership between #BCBSRI and the Brown University School of Public Health, is an annual statewide survey that captures how Rhode Islanders perceive their well-being. At BCBSRI, we know that health is so much more than what happens within the healthcare system: it’s about essential human needs. This comprehensive plan outlines CCHSS's commitment to prioritize public health promotion and community education over the next several years, aiming to significantly enhance community well-being. Mission "We work together to promote, protect, and improve the health and quality of life through exceptional public health services and education." Vision Statement "We will promote and support the health and well-being of the public both now and for future generations." Core Values Service, Professionalism, Open-Mindedness, Respect, Teamwork Director Barbara Lang expressed her dedication to proactive planning and transparency in the department's operations, emphasizing the importance of doing "the right things right.". "It is important for the health department to plan ahead and do the right things right. #funfactfriday Did you know that the first #Health Department established in the United States was in #Boston? The department was created in 1799 with Paul Revere as the first health officer. Today, the state of Massachusetts has 351 cities and towns and 2 federally recognized tribes that are independently organized to deliver local public health services and operate autonomously from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. This creates a uniquely fragmented state public health system filled with inconsistency in capacity and quality, substantial inefficiency, and redundancy. It has only been in the last 5 years, through the development of the "Blueprint for Public Health Excellence" and the passing of the "State Action for Public Health Excellence (SAPHE)," that the state has started addressing and making progress increasing cross-jurisdictional sharing of public health services to strengthen the service delivery capacities of local departments. #publichealth #communityhealth #localhealth #healthequity #sdoh
