Being home for Diwali is a joy that I wish everyone could experience, yet for many, the journey feels just out of reach. Today, as I set foot in Bhilwara, I felt an indescribable warmth – a feeling only “home” can bring. Being here for Diwali, surrounded by family, familiar scents, and the sights of my hometown, fills me with a sense of peace and joy that no words can capture. But as I savor these moments, I can’t help but think of those who couldn’t make it home. For many, the distance isn’t just physical – it’s financial. With airfare prices often rising due to dynamic pricing, the journey home becomes a stretch that many can’t afford. This isn’t just about missing a festival; it’s missing out on moments that bring us closer, on memories with loved ones, and on a chance to recharge where we feel most at ease. Of course, airlines are in business, and profitability is essential – I get it. But isn’t there a balance to be struck? Maybe some regulation on dynamic pricing could ensure that travel during critical times, like festivals, remains accessible to more people. After all, for many, travel is a necessity, not a luxury. It’s a bridge that connects us to the people and places that matter most. If you are working with Indian colleagues, there are a few things you should know about Diwali coming up later this month, which is celebrated by the Hindu community in India and the Indian diaspora worldwide. It is a time for family reunions for Indians worldwide. Festivities include deep cleaning of homes, a lot of traditional foods and sweets, fireworks and religious rituals. Many people in India take time off to be with their families. However, those working for multinational companies don't always get the opportunity because customers need to be handled, and project deadlines need to be met. These project deadlines may have been set by international stakeholders who may not be aware of the local festivities. Indians, known for being indirect in their communication, prefer not to say ‘No’ to someone in a higher position. There are several culturally inclusive companies that try to compensate for this time by organising celebrations in the office so that the employees don't miss their families too much, but it's never the same. Western clients should be mindful of these holidays during project planning. It is a good practice to have a list of local festivals and holidays on the calendar at the start of the year.
