Something’s cooking at BigCommerce — since the appointment of their new CEO. They have gone in and hired a bunch if execs: Doug Hollinger, new senior VP of go-to-market strategy, who comes from Accenture where he led B2C commerce strategy. John Huntington, senior VP of global partnerships, who comes from Siteimprove, where he was SVP of global alliances and channels. And Ryan Means, new senior VP of global services, who joins the company from Merkle, where he was SVP of technology. I have long been rather underwhelmed with their market positioning, given the fact that they have a very strong feature offering. 'How can we avoid p*ssing you off?' I asked this question verbatim yesterday to a new multinational retailer we were onboarding for our CVO program at Blend - eCommerce CRO & CVO Agency. Here's the answers: 1. Don't always say 'Yes' Our client had had a lot of experience with agencies who either would: a) Say 'yes' we can do that, to find out in days/weeks that it was not technically possible or achievable. b) Say 'yes' to every idea, and then get feedback months later that they would not have recommended the solution requested by our client. Ultimately, most good clients appreciate that there are limitations as to what an agency can do and that not every idea they have will be the best for the business. As an industry, agencies and consultants, have got to do better at having the confidence to push back. 2. Bring solutions, not problems 'Each month, we'd be presented with a list of issues that had been found and then asked 'what would you like us to do'. Erm, fixing them would be great...' This is something that Peter Gardner and I were guilty of in the early days. For earlier stage agencies providing a retained service, it can feel tempting to come up with a huge list of issues to show you're competent and willing. The issue is that without a solution for these, clients can feel lost and begin to question the value an agency can bring if you're merely finding problems. 3. Don't send long emails 'Just tell me what I need to do'. Similarly to the second issue here 'over communicating' was a big problem, and not having a clear action list in comms wasted time and caused frustration. As an agency and consultant, its easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the client can afford to invest as much time and effort into eCommerce as you do, but the reality will always be that there are multiple other channels and objectives they need to focus on.
