Ever have one of those weeks where you dig through old projects and BAM! Your passion reignites brighter than a firefly convention? Yeah, that just happened to me! Unearthing some past gems reminded me why I love this field so much – it's where medical mysteries meet furry (or feathery, or scaly!) detectives. The journey's been a wild ride! Clinical case presentation of a dog with a skin condition who went full-on ninja with fly-biting and surface licking (Spoiler alert: it was fascinating!) Or how about that deep dive into dog-owner relationships and telehealth use? (Turns out, a strong bond might just be the best medicine!). Fast forward to 2021, and I'm presenting a pilot study on predicting horse aggression through YouTube videos (yep, you read that right!).These projects, along with a Master's degree almost landed me "Master Student of the Year" (whoop whoop!), which really fueled my research fire. Even though funding kept me from presenting at the European Veterinary College of Behaviour Medicine and Animal Welfare Congress on some other cool behaviour case studies, it just solidified my mission: research and clinical practice, gotta have them both! These experiences are the happy tail wags in my career story, and I can't wait to see where this amazing field takes me next.  So, I urge all of you to nominate those incredible undergraduate and postgraduate students who are making waves in veterinary medicine. Let's celebrate their hard work, fuel their confidence, and pave the way for their success stories! 🎮 🎓 📊 We've teamed up with Albane Rives an assistant professor in statistics at the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire - ULiege , to introduce statistics and innovate how the subject is taught. Recognizing the challenge many students face with this subject, we've created an innovative game-based learning platform. Our new game challenges students to treat and analyze data to understand the effectiveness of veterinary plans. It aims to deepen students' understanding of the need of statistics by putting them in realistic decision-making situations where statistics can be applied. Key features of our game: - Data Recording: The responses made by the students are recorded and exported to Excel, allowing us to analyze their thought processes and refine our teaching strategies. - Integrated Feedback and Support: While the game provides real-time feedback, students can also ask questions during the course, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience. We're thrilled to see positive early feedback from the students who've played the game, and we're motivated to keep developing games that transform educational experiences and enhance student autonomy. For some time now, I've been emphasizing the urgent need to rethink the way we interact with horses. If we are to have a sustainable and harmonious future together, we must prioritize healthier, more respectful, and not only more ethical approaches to our relationships with them but one that also respects our respective telos. In this context the concept of Social License to Operate (SLO) is becoming increasingly relevant. In the equine world, this means ensuring that our practices align with societal values and ethical standards, promoting the welfare and wellbeing of horses in all aspects of our interactions with them. Given my close association with Symbiosis Horse Academy, I am acutely aware of the potential for perception bias here. However, I couldn't but share the article, and celebrate how fortunate I am to be surrounded by brilliant minds who are tirelessly spreading knowledge and advancing science to foster a more enlightened approach to human-horse coexistence. I celebrate the opportunity to learn from these individuals and contribute as much as I can to this new way of interacting with horses in particular but to all animals for that matter. Rainy days will come, but with the knowledge and strategies we are developing, I am confident we can create a future where humans and horses coexist in a way that respects the dignity and well-being of both species.
