There are more and more wounded places in the world, more and more visible, more relevent and less easy to ignore than ever they were. 'Wounded places'; such a broad catch-all term for something that may feel overwhelmingly vast: human-impacted landscapes, oceanscapes, rivers and air space, which are tainted, damaged, polluted and dangerous to life. We may feel that these places are out of bounds, collectively shunned and disavowed from consensus reality. Yet we see them, the asbestos-riddled lot the end of the street, the plastics in the local river, leachates oozing out of a hill we once played on, the rumbling of some unknown subterranean process. How do we turn towards these places? How do we find connection, meaning and beauty where all, at first, we see is grief? How can we fell supported and held with compassion as we undertake this important act? Radical Joy for Hard Times is a charity whose core ethos is about supporting people and communities to turn toward damamged landscapes. We invite you to come along to a donation-based training to find out more. What is an Earth Exchange, this simple and powerful ritual practice? What is it all about? Why do it? Why did it come about? How can you host one for your own community? Please come along to a donations based, 1.5 hour training on Saturday May 4th at 10am BST (UTC+1) that I am hosting. Please click on the link and register. https://lnkd.in/eEvZ32GH

WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA... RECOVERY UPDATE... It's been (21) days, and some folks still do not have water or power... PART 1-SWANNONOA, NC...is one of the hardest hit areas by Helene...so we POP'D UP on the residence of Jasper Apartments and staff with hot Food, live Music and good Vibez! Our hope is that they are inspired and empowered to have a better day! PAY IT FORWARD POP-UPS: HOT FOOD, LIVE MUSIC, AND GOOD VIBEZ READ...READ...READ...READ...READ...READ... BFCT will start POP'N UP in other towns and cities around Western North Carolina affected by the storm (we will not post before, but we will post after). ➡️ WHO ARE WE? We are an award-winning small business located in Western North Carolina since 2019. We may be the most delightful company in the world, and we promote "Unity in the Outdoor Community and BEYOND!" Many of our staff members are located in and around Western North Carolina too. ❤️ The POP-UPS are NOT part of our normal business model, but we believe they are the best way to "assist folks" who are grieving and searching for next steps to move forward. We also believe the idea of serving folks hot food and getting folks back to work is a great way to empower those who are willing and able. 🎯Hot FOOD (food service workers, and Food Trucks, etc will be paid for their services). 🎯Live MUSIC (local musicians will be paid for their talents). 🎯Good VIBEZ (folks have been devastated by the storm and recovery will take years, so we'll amplify Unity at each event) We are changing the world...one campfire at a time! The campfire in our logo is The Unity Blaze, and it means "You are Invited and Welcomed." Regardless of your race, age, gender or ability. blackfolkscamptoo.com

Where can journalists find great stories that no one else is writing about? There's nothing like exploring parts of the USA that the national media seldom visits. Bravo to Oregon writer Geoff Nudelman for this fascinating piece from eastern Oregon's high desert country. This is rancher country, and wildfire country, too. We at The Chronicle of Philanthropy commissioned Geoff to spend time on the dirt roads of Harney County, as part of a major coverage initiative called "The Commons." Geoff came back with a fascinating story of how long-time adversaries have learned to work together, building fire-fighting strategies that are fairer and more effective. There's plenty of coverage these days about polarization in America. But there's just as much quiet cooperation going on, too, as people with different heritages and values discover how to get more done, working together. If you're interested in such themes -- and I hope the answer is yes -- check out Geoff's story, and sign up for more such coverage via The Commons's weekly newsletter on LinkedIn. https://lnkd.in/gPSfk6JH

Despite historic public and private investments in the growing field of evidence-based methods, relatively few cities have reduced community violence at the city level and sustained those reductions across leadership transitions. With support from The Pew Charitable Trusts and in partnership with field experts, California Partnership for Safe Communities (CPSC) began working in 2022 to identify the “key capacities” associated with the ability of cities to achieve and sustain reductions in community violence. The findings have significant implications for public policy and how we take on violence in cities. We explored why some cities struggle while others thrive in reducing community violence. Engaging with experts and practitioners across national, state, and local levels, we unearthed six key capacities outlined in our latest Whitepaper. Beyond theoretical models, these principles are pivotal in enabling cities to reduce violence. Read more in the link below! Once you see these capacities, you won't be able to unsee them in your projects. #CommunitySafety #CVI #ViolenceReduction #SafeCities #UrbanSafetyInnovation #Whitepaper
