What’s the best way to approach the federal hiring process? Hear from Deborah, an employee at the US Navy: "Complete your application, talk with other employees, and apply to different areas. The process can take a while because of background checks but stay the course, the wait is worth it. The benefits are amazing and it’s great being part of the team."

That is so true! I'm attempting to be hired as an "open to public" employee. Although I have the qualifications for most of the positions, it's very difficult. Most "open to public" positions it says you do not need federal service experience, then you read the description and it says you need federal experience. I still apply to those positions. Applying on USAJobs, it goes through a process to ping certain words, if your resume does not have the number of pings, it's automatically discarded, which is unfortunate. The position close time is typically 1 year. I've been applying for almost a year+ now and have about 17 applications in. Half of those are in review, the other half are waiting to close. Keeping my fingers crossed and staying optimistic 🤩 One Day!!

I have applied and spoke to individuals that are currently employed there and they would not help or assist me in filing the application. Guess that tells me every man (or woman)for yourself.

The federal hiring process is complex but it doesn't have to be complicated! Utilize all the resources available to you to learn the ins and outs of the federal hiring process. Visit our page to learn more.

Very true, it is a marathon and not a spring Also, if you want a government job talk to others who have a job, or those who have navigated the process. Don't listen to those who say its impossible I navigated being a GS1 all the way to a GS-15 it is possible, you just need the right strategy and approach.

Apply and forget. It will likely be months before you hear anything back from any application with the federal government. Prepare to be disappointed as screeners that are unfamiliar with what they're hiring for overlooks your qualifications and deny you, even if you're the perfect candidate. Mentally prepare to apply to around 1000 positions within the federal government before possibly be hired. Be prepared to need to relocate across the country to find opportunities paying 40% below market wage. Is it worth it? Definitely could be.

You have to learn to be patient, that's for sure (month #6 on the wait here myself).

Thank you for this I have been searching the job boards for part time work while I'm in school, this gives me encouragement to apply.
