Graduation rates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) tend to be higher for Black male students compared to other institutions. For black students, the six-year graduation rate at four-year public institutions is approximately 45.9%, with Black men having the lowest completion rate at 40% (UNCF). In contrast, HBCUs have demonstrated more encouraging statistics. Black HBCU colleges like Wilberforce University with an 83% graduation rate Howard University with a 63% graduation rate Hampton University with a 59% graduation rate Morehouse College with a 55% graduation rate.

Birmingham City University host the inaugural Black Leaders in Higher Education summit in Birmingham Delegates at the first gathering of the Black Leaders in Higher Education network hear from Vivienne Stern, chief executive of Universities UK that it was “clear” a racial “deficit” had to be addressed within higher education, and greater collaboration was needed to tackle the sector-wide inequalities. While the number of black academics working in the UK sector has increased in recent years, they remain severely under-represented at the highest levels of research and administration.BLHE brings together black higher education professionals. Professor David Mba, FREng PFHEA, vice-chancellor of Birmingham City and chair of the group, told Times Higher Education that it creates an opportunity to act on the “lived experiences” of racial inequality within higher education and to advocate for change throughout the sector. He said the incoming government must focus on addressing the racial pay gap and ensure that racial inequalities are central to conversations about inequality, and that the university sector needs to work more broadly on improving access for BAME talent into university pipelines. “But from my point of view, it’s about empowerment, and it goes back to the levelling-up agenda. The new education secretary needs to think about social mobility in the broader sense, and how we support those from lower socio-economic groups. #ICYMI | A California bill, which passed the state Senate last week and is making its way to the Assembly, would recognize colleges and universities in the state that enroll high numbers of Black students and take intentional steps to better serve them. The bill would establish a formal “Black-Serving Institution” designation for these institutions. Colleges and universities are eligible for the designation if they enroll a student body that’s at least 10 percent Black, or has at least 1,500 Black students, and take various measures to support them, including drafting a Black student success plan (and allocating resources to that plan), fostering a “robust” African American studies program and cocurricular educational activities or affinity centers for Black students. #HigherEd https://bit.ly/4bC1wRq

ICYMI | Next year, Howard University is expected to gain Research-1 status, the coveted Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classification for doctoral universities with very high research activity. HBCU leaders and experts say Howard’s ascendance would be a win for the entire sector as more historically Black institutions strive to make it into the upper echelons of research. Currently 10 other HBCUs have R-2 status, connoting high research activity; a couple are already hot on Howard’s heels, falling just shy of meeting the criteria for next year. R-1 status has become a badge of honor in the higher ed world, known to attract high-caliber faculty and prestigious research funding opportunities. But for two decades, the designation has eluded historically Black colleges and universities, many of which remain hampered by chronic underfunding and other challenges. Multiple HBCUs have been vying to join the ranks of R-1 universities, galvanizing their faculty to apply for grants and funneling unprecedented resources into research. The research conducted is a step forward to support the retention, progression, and promotion of Black Early-Career Academics.
